It is not for programmers, it is for people who want to open war3patch.mpq to see the new files the patch brought to the game

How exactly do you open the patch.mpq with WC3veiwer? I've tried, but then, i didnt have the listfile...ill try now. Do i need to put the listfile in particular place? Can you even look into the patch mpq with veiwer?

you have to add the listifle to the mpq as (listfile) (no paths)

But...in the mpq itself or in the Warcraft folder? And which MPQ?

I tried adding the listfile under the name listfile in WinMPQ, but it doesn't work. Please explain the process to me like I am a very, very dumb 6-year-old.

as another option you can select the listfile in the Settings dialog of WinMPQ as external listfile (so it doesn't get imported but will be looked up whenever you open an archive with unknown files).
This way you'll still be able to update through battle.net because the mpq doesn't get changed.
