How to tell a map is made by a noob (hance also a "what not to do" thread...)

The_Inquisitor3
-a map with low interaction (no "micro" )
-Stupid story (i really hate those (like sheeps constructing farms to block other players))
-Slow units
-ugly enviroment
-simple terrain
-see the same map with 42342034 versions with words or numbers after the name like "WINTERMAUL33A" :nono:
-short games...

BUT the good maps 4 me have

--Complex math triggers
-- Funy heros

any 1 here saw the map "baseball" .. u reallly play baseball in there.. u can hit the ball, the ball fly to a random direction. if a plyer touch the ball it auto attach to the player ITS vERY NICE!! the ball bounces when hiting the ground... the map have a crapy terrain, but its REALLY GOOD!

- any map that doesn't tell you how to play
- any map that you still don't know what your doing after playing it twice
- a map with less than 10 edited things (ie abilities, doodads, or units)
- 99% of all maps that have in their name: TD, MAUL, WARS, ARENA

I don't think story line is amazingly important, i mean it does make the game better...but a good game will be played a lot of times (unless it's RPG), in which case, i don't want to be reading the same damn storyline everytime i play.

An RPG without a storyline is like playing Whak-a-mole for hours on end. There's no real reason why you're levelling up the lifeless characters, you just do it so you can whack the monsters more efficiently. Yay.

Even a dopey storyline "Oh, my friend was kidnapped, we must find him" can provide entertainment; a good buddy and I hook up for WC map swapping weekly, and inevitably we find a dumb plot on an RPG that can provide endless mocking. Particularly when you do a quest for an NPC and all he provides you is some cheap trinkets.

That said, an option to minimize the impact of storyline is appreciated; nobody wants to sit through interminable cut scenes. 20-30 seconds of set up/wrap up on a side quest is more than sufficient.

well, i guess that n00b maps don't have any perticular signs and "not-to-do"s, but u can tell if it's a n00b map at the very start of the game...u just get that feeling, u see trigger errors, the crapiness of the entire idea etc....:)
am i a n00b because i don't lock my maps ?:)

but, i also have some "noob" signs like :
giving the same spells to 8 heros (critical and evasion), i mean WTF ?:)
spells "overlaping" (i think it's fixed in TFT, but i've seen it happen)

just editing the spells without editing the tooltips, case 1: adding levels to spells, and the tooltip says 0 dmg, or changing the data values of the spell and the tooltip has the original ones....

and much more details like that :)

I love RPGs and hate RPGs on battle.net they just plain suck. Almost everyone that is released I could improve with my skills, which are not even close as high as people from this forum. To me that seems sad. It is very rare to so a good terrian on a Bnet map, so basicly almost all bnet maps are noobs maps. There are a few maps mainly AOS that are good, but most maps require no real skill, even the ones that require skill, you just use the same stradegy over and over or else you will lose, speaking of mainly TDs here. One of these days I am going to get together with a real good map makersa and create a good RPG map for the use over battle net. Plus I hate when people "steal" ideas from the created, Mainly alot f people just edit someone elses map and claim it as there own, or in most case just change the name and say they made it. All and all I must sound like and whiney little bitch (I am but atleast I can amit it, right?). Well thats my 2 c.e.n.t.s.

I apologize Biflspud, i wasn't referring to RPGs, becuase as you put it Whak-a-mole is a very boring game. I figured that was a given.

You're right... When I look at a map on battle.net, almost ANY map. I realize. Hey wait a minute. This is so easy to make. I could make this in 5 seconds? Why is it so popular? What gives? How come there are no maps on b.net that give me a sense of mystery as to how they were done? I know how they're all made, I've never seen a map on battle.net that made me think more then 10 seconds, literally, I'm not kidding here, 10 seconds, before getting the basic fundamental idea about how to work it.

Why are there so few good maps on battle.net that are actually popular!?

- maps that are only for people that can read or speak French
- maps that are only for people that can read or speak German
- some fundamental triggers not working. Like a gate that cant be opened or closed, or a dialogue that doesnt end because the trigger is made "from behind"
- an RPG that keeps the original creep names and stats, while editing the heroes.
- a TD example: That some ultimate tower also costs wood, but there is no way to get wood.
- all inbalance of the serious type
- maps that give some players an unfair advantage over other players (by purpose)

and yes its weird with the simple maps being the much played. Any of u tried "Hero Race" ? well for those who havent, ill just explain a game from the start:

u start by choosing ur hero (of course) then the camera pans on the red guys spot (first noob clue) and it does so for all players. Then there is a hero that can fly, and thereby not be attacked by melee units (almost all the lvls) The different players "areas" are seperated by some boundary (one of the first not-noob clues) then u have this tiny area to fight some levels of creeps on. there spawns 10 units or so per lvl. Some of the skills in the game can however, hit the other players hero or steal their kills. When u get enough money the red guy (read: The Creator of the map) can buy a dagger of escape. Which means that he can now blink!! (which includes blinking between the areas of the players, and he could also kill another player by doing so... BUT the other players cant blink to his place... unfair eh ? when u at last has completed the lvls (if u were lucky to get one of the overpowered heroes, else its not possible) the camera pans to some area, where u are supposed to recieve an award of sorts, but the camera moves little bit towards the reward, then it applies the first camera again, then u repeat that sequence some times and voila u have the ending of the map. Another grim bug the map has is: the red guy can actually blink to the place wheer the award is, an then win the game from the first lvl (read: only the red player)

if any of u have a different opnion than this towards the map, plz state them.

Don't make a map that has already been done.
The golden rule of map making

That rule is so true... thats why many maps became popular is because they made it first... and somtimes people will remake the map like footmen warz to make it better... whicth is okay...

Don't make fun of novices, goddamn it you were all one of them too.

I guess I can say your all n00bs hahah, I pwnz0r j00!, or I could just say this thread is really stupidly titled, and its content is bloody common sense.

As far as the foriegn language thing: NEWS FLASH, NOT EVERYONE SPEAKS ENGLISH, and, SHOCKINGLY, MAY WANT TO PLAY THIER GAME IN THE LANGAUGE THEY SPEAK.

dude you ppl shouldnt make fun of them, Although 90% of what you said is true. the only way to learn its to build upon others success, so when noobs look at other ppls maps they edit them to use the maps properties to better their own skills. eventually they get better and better, untill they don't even edit any more. so basically the whole point of maps like Footman warz and Wintermaul ripoffs is for novice map makers to suck all the info from it, to better their own skills...

...on the other hand though, Bnet is full of retards with no skill that just edit maps like footman warz to insert their name in it, in an attempt to make people think they are good map makers.

DragonHunterVII you are either the biggest hypocrite ever, or have turrets syndrome.
I suspect the former.
Don't make fun of them, (Derogitory connation) casting them aside.
90% of what said is true (Statistics pulled straight out of your ***, right?)
Noobs (HA, yeah you really respect them!)
Bnet is full of retards (Wow, we should totally listen to you the guy who says don't insult them!)

Oh and lets add that your sig says that everyone sucks.

This thread is insulting. And is full of hypocrites.

KurupteD.
Every open rpg circulating on bnet is a horrid newbie monstrosity (except Legacies). On most of the rpgs, the newbies just cover the entire map with grass, add a bunch of trees, maybe a few doodads, and just slap on the boring Melee Heros (ie: bloodmage, paladin). They have 0 edited items, 0 edited spells, and 0 edited heros/units. I feel like im playing melee when im actually playing a custom game. Has anyone ever played "Sol's Open RPG" that has to be one of the newbiest maps ive ever seen! Thank god for legacies, it makes all these noob rpgs look like complete **** which they are. Also any map that takes less then a month to make is also a newbie piece of worthless bullshit. OH GOD! I HAVENT EVEN MENTIONED THE 10000 VERSIONS OF HELMS DEEP MAPS! I WILL HAVE A HEARTATTACK IF I EVEN START ON THEM!

For some reason I love sols, though it is extremely noobish.... I like the ascent to godhood concept.

What also makes map bad is when it has a periodic trigger stating the author of the map, his website and his email, every 1 minute...
