Prodcloud, could you please use the "Edit post" button and add in any stuff to your prev messages. There's no need to keep posting after yourself. It kind of makes it harder for me to read the messages since it takes longer to load the page :(

actually Blade is a fairly talented modeler (from the tank models he showed). They seams very true to the concept art and a good use of polies.

When making extreme low poly chars for RTS, there are ways to cheat and save polies by using textures for clothes rather than modelling it. Sure you can say the FF7 models are higher and have X amount of detail, but the fact is you're not making an FF7 model, you're making a War3 model.

The thing about having such low poly counts is that you have to find ways of keeping poly counts low while at the same time keeping a level of detail that will make the model stand out and be recognized. For your example about hair on cloud, well his hair most likely is not all polies. I'm guessing they used simple geometry to get the basic shape of the hair and used textured planes with transparency to mimic individual strands of hair. This is also a method you could use instead of modelling his hair, just use planes with alpha transparency. If you look at the sorceress model in War3, you can see that her hair is actually a bunch of flat squares placed all around her head, but when you get the textures and transparency in it turns into natural looking low-poly hair.

For detail of clothing you can also probably get away with a simple cube and use a real good texture for the body. After you have a texture right, modify that cube slightly by adding extra lines and getting in proportions.

The last bit of advice I can give is to manage your poly count. Trim off faces that people won't see, but I don't mean the undersides of feet or anything like that. If you are looking at your char from top-down, focus on making the top higher poly and better looking than say anything below where you're less likely to notice. Because of low poly counts, you will probably have to rely more on textures than actual modelling.

This is what I've learned through low poly modelling and I hope this stuff helps you out. Sometimes you have to unlearn what you know and try different ways of getting to your goal.

ff7 had horrible models for people in the movement parts. The battle graphics were good the the rest sucked. Tehy had huge hands with no fingers. I know its a ps1 game but couldnt they have done a litle better?

I dunno which Final Fantasy you started with but if you look at all the FF's back in the sprite days, you would see that they all have that SD (Super deformed) stylized look to them. FF7 is mimicking that with it's exaggerated stylized look with as many polies as it could push at the time. Why are the hands huge and blocky? Why are his pants so huge? Why are his arms so skinny? It's all a part of style.

I'm sure they could've made him look "Human", but that isn't what makes Cloud look good. This sort of thing relates to what Blizzard does too. If you even think Warcraft's cinematic characters are proportional, I'd be laughing hard. They're all stylized to make it look good.

Ok first im sorry if i sounded like i was flaming ididnt mean to.
and i didnt say ur poly is too high that its unacceptable.
it is, all i was saying is make better use of ur polygons to add detail without adding further polygons(maybe you could post a wireframe shot). on a 2nd note i dont think they could of topped 2000 polygons in ff7. the game was released in 97 vodoo2 wasent even released(squares first 3d game aswel !)- half life wich was released around a year after had 800 polygons characters and it was considerd a benchmark.they also dont look detailed enougth. the hair moved - that doesnt mean it has to be extremely detailed.

ps : i agree with triceron about the not in-battle characters

...........hmm....I can put a wire frame pic....and umm.....i dun think the models are that low poly.......
ff7 characters are mebe more mebe less then mine but im just tryin to mimic the ff7 style/look......since most characters are on an angle i cant do 100% of the job..... like instead of usin the reference for da whole body i used it only for da head....and hair....wile the rest i made without a reference.... barret is exactly 900 polys cloud is 1200 and sephiroth 1400
.....i dun think thats too much of a polycount...cuz orcs strong hold as summ1 said before is well over 2000....so havin a cuple of orc strong holds wont lag down old graphix card like nvidida tnt riva then i don think my models will.....:P

btw sorry if i was flaming, i was trying to help earlier

now, so you know, seph has an 8-10 foot sword(the scene with the dragon it looks nealy 20 though hehe), and the bustersword goes to about clouds upper thigh from shoulder, so the blade is about 3-4 feet long, and in ur modle they equal, i unno if its easy to fix but im trying to help

Blade
Do you plan on improving it ? cause you arent posting any updates i want to know if im wasting my time here.
look at the pics i gave u. exagurated proportions !
huge forerams, huge thighes nothing looks balanced
the torso grows wider and doesnt wide at the bottom like if an *** or fat was around the sides. the *** starts with the huge thighes.

sephiroth : same proportion comments as on clould altho his forearms arent bigger like cloud's. use less polygons on his coat
wich looks rough in the pictures i willl give you. and use more on the torso and other needed places. your torso's look just squares
they are smaller then the legs by much, the torso is small yet exagurated as it widens alot towards the top. make the legs longer, cloud's espacialy !. another note is sephiroths sword is a masamune urs looks like a katana. it has to have a handle
Could
Sephiroth Front
Sephiroth ( Back )
