Wc3c Community Campaign Contest

Just to be different, I'll address people's points backwards, starting with Eul:

Suggestion:

Allow any skins/models to be used. Simply detract from their "originality." All you are doing is trying to create an elitist community, where if you aren't any good at one type of thing you're going to lose, and I really feel that isn't fair. If one map has no custom skins, but has, say, an excellent storyline, great custom spells, and godly terrain, and these features are better than any other map in the contest, how can you possibly call this a legitimate contest? If you're going to include that in the rules, then also include the rule NO WC3CAMPAIGN STAFF as well.

I myself am not skilled at skinning. And I was going to enter this contest, but I can't now, since I am using other people's quality skins.
This competition is designed for teams not solo creators. If you happen to be gifted in all areas then feel free, but the idea of this is to promote teamwork in small groups with people from all communities and skill specialities. If you're good at terrain and triggers but can't make a skin for peanuts, then logic dictates that you team up with a guy who does great skins. If you're good at models but don't know an Event from a Condition, then join with someone who does. All aspects of the map will be taken into account, not just the aesthetics (as was previously mentioned).

The unprotected rule, is, well, extremely silly. Good maps usually die a quick death when released unprotected to the public, due to the fact that newbies slap their names on them and make a bunch of crappy changes that ruin it. Look at DOTA now. It's ruined because of my mistake of releasing an unprotected version, and it can never be recovered. After that debacle, I am NEVER releasing one of my maps unprotected again, especially not a masterpiece like DOTA 2(which i was going to enter into the contest.)
You made it, so you should be picking up the obvious that DOTA was multiplayer. We are looking for campaigns, thusly single-player. Nobody is silly enough to duplicate a single-player campaign to make it 'n00btastic'. Currently as far as I am aware, there's no rule against making a singular multiplayer map. It'd just have to be the best dang multiplayer map to ever hit Battle.net. If you're worried about protection problems, simply send your entry as an unencrypted version, and release the encrypted copy to the public.

As you can see, your problems can be resolved with common sense :).

Now onto the comments about 'unhealthy competition'. Evidently there are certain bonuses at stake here; recognition, respect and the most obvious being the monetary reward. Once again common-sense comes to the rescue and dictates that any team/individuals attempting to sabotage others' work will be immediately excluded from the competition, pending an investigation (I've always wanted to say that).

The rules/guidelines should answer most other questions when they are announced.

Eul, you also mentioned that you are currently using other people's skins.

The rules already state that all entries have to be brand-spanking new, not a modification of soemthing already out there and submitted to us.

Hence, it doesn't matter what you're using now. This contest is aimed at teams, hence you'd have to work WITH people.

----------------------

Draco, if we were to split it up in a way like that, the 2nd place winner would definately get more than the third.

ah im confused. all projects that are hosted here have all the most talented and most dedicated members. if theyre really working for their now non profit mod theyll continue it, leaving all who wish to get new models new skins new sounds new interfaces cant unless they do it themselves, but if they could dont you think theyd be working on a mod already. another thing i notice here is that the request section of this site is full of requests great with no help.

just my 2 confused cents

Damn, I got all excited when I saw this, then read further and realized DotR as an ongoing project wasn't eligible :bgrun: Oh well, life is full of dissapointments.

Here's some wishful thinking though: What about sequels? Or prequels? Do those count as recycled content, or do they stand as their own unique work? Because I planned on starting the prequel to DotR soon...just haven't gotten going on it - yet ;)

Hmmm. I was sceptical at first, but this could be a pretty good way of getting people to make some quality mods. Definitely split up the prize money - I'd say over 5 or even 10 people instead of 1 or 3, as it'd be best to reward more people for their great work instead of one person getting it all (i.e. More fair).

Blizzplanet's news system was responsible for the recent hacking incident. They will return once it's resolved.

Oh, and 1 more thing. Someone said 4 months? FOUR MONTHS??!! F-O-U-R M-O-N-T-H-S ? ? ? ! ! ! ! I'm not complaining, but it's IMPOSSIBLE to make a really high quality mod. And lack of time can cause people trying to make everything asap, and as result it means lack of quality. I think it should be AT LEAST half a year or more.

I've seen some pretty decent mini-mods come out of other game communities in such a timeframe with similar contests... why should this one be any different?

I think I can have a full-fledged campaign out in four months - but I already have a team assembled. I dunno how quickly other people are going to get organized.

And what about sequels/prequels? Do those have a greenlight or no? And when can we officially start working on these?

DraX - Hmm. It can be very hard to some people (Without all the necessary people with skills too) to do it all in four months. Perhaps the comp should be to do the first map only?
