As for tool tips, I remember playing a game where the tool tip was a mix between english and spanish, some other language and 1337.

It looked like this:

B0z0r Rox0r0zzzingZ ubear ttack 7hingg. El Esponal t3h n00bsh r0z0rz"

The icon was green, and the structure wasnt able to be built because the builder didnt have repair. How do they have the time to spell so bad.

Intresting thread.

My pointers:
If you're going to create a map, how about doing something original? If you can't, then jack a friends idea, a friend who is incapible of creating such a map himself. Now go back to the drawingboard, either with yourself or with a friend, and DRAW. You need to have almost all aspects of the game completed before you lay your first hand on the map. It could, as it has in some cases, be made up along the road, and still be good, but as a general rule, it isn't. Draw down your ideas on paper or notepad, maybe even word or excel. Which ever way you do it, document everything that CAN BE USED. When you're done, and have a product, you can begin to produce it.

Rather then saying "Oh no, that's too hard to do", ask someone about it, or take a while to figure it out. Then complete it and your map will be as you planned it (And hopefully good and entertaining).

Now when you've done all this, PROTECT YOUR MAP. Put CLEAR CREDITS, and do ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU COULD POSSIBLY THINK OF TO PREVENT CREDIT STEAL AND EDITING STEAL.
