My plan was the characters are still conscious of the original time and place and are trying to return home, all the while harassed and attacked by the Shadowed One's minions... my one should be up soon... but, you can go your way if you want...

Yes...that's the point. If this turns out to be one big battle with the shadowed one and co. it would be no different from your conventional RPG only in picture mode.

Alternative universes are fun...:D *evil evil smirk* and it also gives the artists more room for development into other stuff.

one may try to influence the dungeon master to change the story, but only the DM really can...
