I posed the same question here. Your mileage may vary.

Id say around 300-700k is good. You shouldnt exceed that unless you add custom skins or big stuff like that. Custom abilities dont take that much space, me and my bro so far have over 200 custom abilities in a new map were making, and it only increased map size like 5k.

Custom skins i hear make the map alot bigger, personally i think they are stupid and useless :)

ive played large sized maps that suck, i dont care what size ur map is as long as its good... ill dl it off a site or from a buddy if i need to to play it, but if its not fun, i wont even bother

Why isn´t this Poll considered spam? ;> I mean I asked about the same thing just for single-player and got called names like "spammer", "double account user" *whine whine*...

Because your thread was made for your own purpose, while this info is interesting for everyone.

If you would give your own mother for a map, it can be over 1 meg. If it isn't super good, lower it. 56kers whine, and people on Bnet are generally retarded. /rant.

Edit: Ex:
X:OMFG. THIS TAKES 1 MINUTE TO DOWNLOAD? EW ERE EN 56GAY OMFGGGGGGG N00BARS!!!!!!11oneoneone
X has left.

Edit again: Mech, I have to agree with you.

@hodi: just stop ur whining, a singleplayer map has little to no boundries in size because your not dealing through battle.net and speeds are so much faster outside of the bnet world just because the information doesnt have to go through customs... think about it: what would be faster? A mexican trying to get into the US via airplane or via hopping the border? So i answer to your question: there are no limits on single player.

@everyone else: i don't know why the poll turned out like this bu anything over or close too 1 meg will never be played regardless of how great a map it is. Just remove custom skins and models, they are completely not worth it, use them on singleplayer maps... multiplayer maps are there for the sole purpose of being fun to play, not to look spiffy.

Map size doesn't matter as long as its below 2mb, screw 56kers, sorry say. Make 2 maps one with custom skins and one without if people really bitch that much....

That analogy makes no sense at all.

As an estimate, I would say roughly 60% of the people on Battle.net still use 56k. If you say "Screw 'em", you lower your audience from the getgo.

do youguys think a multiplayer rpg that is 480x480 (using a patcher) is too big? it wouldnt have custom skins or anything like that. just custom spells, doodads, triggers, basic things like that. hardly anything new imported.

Let's think about it for a second...

Post 1: A post about how many doodads a single player map is, just to talk about the doodad count and not about actual gameplay, a topic that was really only useful for no one but himself.

Post 2: A post asking the biggest map size for a Battle.net map, just a question, wondering how big he should make his map, a topic useful for everybody.

Which is more likely to be considered spam?

Sooo... Custom skins add about 100kB each, something like that? What about custom buttons and models (if you don't overwrite an old skin, but make a new one, you need a new model as well with changed skin filepath...)? Are they as consuming as skins or are they ok?

Dataangel: How does heavylock reduce the filesize? And by how much, how big was your map before you squeezed it to 100k?

And I disagree that custom art doesn't add to the gameplay, appearance is quite important... not as important as balance or strategy, but it IS important; you can't play a map if icons dont have anything to do with what the spell does, it's just damn confusing.

Edit: Sorry, but I am totally confused. I never check the dates of posts before me, but that's because I always answer to threads on the first page and I just assume they are quite new. How it came to be that my post is the first after half a year in this thread is beyond me.
