You can actually have a 4MB map and people will play it, but it'll have to be incredibly special for lots of people to play it. The lower your filesize, the larger your audience.

Ouch...better make it fun. But that all depends on what internet connection people have. What type of map are you making?

you have to realise that there are people with 56k and anything other 1 mb gets boring for them and for all the other people, i say anything over 1mb is too big, gotta compensate for all the 56kers, another option is to host it on a website so all the 56kers can dl it and the cable ppl are all good on b.net, but this lowers ur audience. I guess it depends on if you are making the map for say a compunity or for all the 10 year olds on b.net

No wonder the good maps never get played...80% of the votes are for >500k and I've never seen a map that big become widespread :bgrun:

The largest maps I have in my DL section are:
FMVH - 1,600k
Keys of Sealing - 613k
DotA - 602k
AZ Hero CTF - 513k
Tides of Blood h - 416k

Only 8% of the maps I have (9 maps) are over 300k. Anything over a meg is going to get a very small audience, but if that's ok then more power to you! :ggani:

Imho, I think it's better to make very good maps that take up as small a space as possible. Peope do have imaginations, and won't really care if your male archer has a female skin so long as the gameplay is excellent.

You guys should check out BlackDick's heavylock program in the tools forum. It reduced my map size by 100KB.

Actually, in a strange break from tradition, that gauntlet map(gauntlet dark end?) is a little over 1 meg and it's played alot (not compared to XXXmaul but...) However I'd say less than 500k is best, and 1 meg is too much for an aos type map...

The maximum map size is 4 MB. You can not play any maps larger than that on Bnet. Maps that are 4 MB take forever though, about 5 minutes even with DSL or Cable, and because of all the 56K, it takes over twice as long. I think even 1 MB is a bit too much, but around there should be good for a map.
