Well the general public gets Gmax....

If you want a free version of Max, get Gmax. Don't complain that it has fewer functions than Max, cuz what do you really expect to get for free?

Consider that my Rant of the Day (tm).

Why should they care about lowering the price when thier main customers are buisnesses who can afford to pay that much.

My favorite its 3dsmax, although Maya and lightwave are also very powerful modelers.

So is Gmax, but that is mostly a stripped version of 3dsmax.

I've never tried the other one...

You forgot XSI, or at least an other category, XSI is by far the best modelling/animating program out there ;). Lots of companies are using it and I find it so much easier to use in comparison to Maya, or 3dsMax. Well i never sat down to learn 3dsMax, but i never tried learning it. I at least tried to learn Maya, and never got anywhere with it. All the models you will ever see me post(Unless specified otherwhere) Were done in XSI. Like these(my Tank and my Science Vessle last post, and a Jetpack). Okay, thats all my models on this website, but i luv XSI soo much more than the other programs, and XSI is one of the top 3 modelling programs, so why isnt it up on your poll...

What I'm wondering is how you people got enough money for 3dsmax, its $3000 bucks dude.

The naughty 'W' word.

That is how we get Max.

As for it being expensive, Maya is even more, the Unlimited version, which comes with a bunch of plugins, costs about USD$12000.

But you can always get the education edition of max, that is like $300 I think, though they don't have one for Max 6 yet.

LOL. Maya is $12000? Ha ha ha. 'Tis so funneh. I don't even think big buisnesses could afford too many of those.

Edit: What is this "Education Edition" you are talking about... can you point me 2 a link?

For the poll: I voted for Wings 3d, its sooooo easy for noobs. Just read Immelman's tut thread for it, normally tuts just tell you how to make it, you click the buttons, have the standard factory product and haven't learned a thing. But I can near-garuntee (spellin'?) that you will learn it.....

I voted for 3Ds Max. If you can afford it (or get it somehow...) then it is easily the best modelling program out there. It is easily the most powerful out of all four of those and in my opinion, very easy to use. The only problem is the cost, but... :gsmile:

Maya is actually more powerful than max, but it is mainly used for Highpoly modelling, like in movies and tv.
Shrek was done in Maya I believe, and the LotR trilogy is using it as well.

Max is better for low poly, though it can be used for highpoly with good effect, Blizzard cinematics are a testament to that.

As for the educational edition, as I said, Discreet, creators of 3DSMax, have just released Max 6, and haven't yet modified a version to be the education edition, but it should happen soon, I know because my school is upgrading to it :D

What you people need to keep in mind is that most expensive 3d programs arnt for the general public, they are for companies.

The worst 3d program for games is Cinema 4d, can you say no edge control. Proboly why its only used for movies, Shrek was paritaly done in it.

Ah, I was wrong.

But Maya complete is $1999.

Maya Unlimited is $6999.

It used to be around $12000 back in the day.

And Max used to be $5000, not its *only* $3,495 :p

I've sorta immersed myself in modelling over the past weekend, and unless I'm missing something (like a tutorial that'd explain what I'm missing), the only viable pathway I've found to making animated units for WCIII is 3dsMax. Which is too bad, because other options seem doable, but just don't pan out.

I tried Wings3D first, and it's nice and simple, perfect for novice, "I just want to make a little change" modding. Converting into a .3ds file works well, and Wings3D can handle converted .MDXes... but it can't save all the detail from the file. So you get exactly the model; none of the animation details. Meaning it makes great statues, and that's about it.

Gmax is frustrating compared to 3Dmax; I found myself screaming at it in rage ("I just want THAT point! Give me THAT point! No, don't tell me that, you crapware!") trying to get it to do something trivial on Wings3D. KDK's importer works well enough (if you get the 12/2002 dated file; the 9/2002 file bungs up most of the time), but it can't export. Meaning it's useless; don't even waste your time going down that road.

And lastly, 3dsMax is pretty dang good. More to the point, it's all that I've found that even works. Of course, once you're done exporting, you'll have to convert both the original and the edit to .MDL files and copy the Geosets from the new back into the old, but that's not too terribly annoying (unless, of course, you're not instinctively perfect with modelling and need to, oh, fix something).

I guess this turned into a rant. Sorry - I'm just a little frustrated with the lack of good options for modelling. :bgrun:
