i wish we could model by just clicking on the pollys and moving them wherever we wanted, then fine tuning it.

Thats how i model, i create objects and point edit them, all my models are made like that.

PS: Point Edit is moving around verticies, edges and faces of a model.

Another note on XSI, it was used for making the demonstrations for scenes in Matrix: Reloaded and revolutions, IE; the Freeway scene (heres a link to the info about it)

I love XSI so much, put it on the poll and ill be the only one to vote for it XD

Cheers

Wings can be found at www.wings3d.com, extensive tutorial and documentation resources can be found in the wings3d forums as well.

3dsmax is now probably the best prog to use as Blizz has released their dev tools for it. (but you need version 4 as that was the one they used, which sorta sucks)

The reason animation programs cost so much $$ is because they're mostly used for animations in MOVIES/VIDEO GAMES. And can you think of any other market? Dreamworks uses maya. How much money does dreamworks make a movie? Can you even count that high? THAT'S WHY maya costs 4000 bucks. It's chump change to dreamworks.

I heard a good way to import .mdx into maya and then use gmax as a medium... I would personally like to know how to get .mdx into maya and out of maya and back to .mdx. That would save a lot of hassle.

I vote for 3DSMAX because its a allrounder prog. Blizz used it, Pixar used it, LOTR used it (pixar, lotr used the others too). Mainly they program their own additions to the progs.

@Talila Vertex editing is only useful for weapons and small stuff. It gets very complex if you use only vertex editing on units and stuff.

I'd like to start by just saying that lightwave sucks, a LOT.

Anyway, maya is actually the best program out there if you want your stuff to look real(though 3ds can do a damn good job too), it also dominates the movie market.
3DS is (as stated above) much better at low poly stuff and easier to use. And for the most part, it dominates the game market.
