I have asked myself the same question. And i chose both. I am already making a map that is an RPG/Open RPG. You start as friends but you have full ability to leave the group. There will be many different/special types of summoning cards, some cards can even summon bosses for a short bit. I expect to see backstabs/theifs/broken friendships. Which is exactly what i am aiming for. Only one person can win, and that by soloing a large dragon that can only be reached after 3 lesser dragons have been defeated. So you can still stick together and then at the end let each try for the dragon.

I have finished the amazing intro for it. Find me on warcraft 3 with the name Closed1. I will gladly show you the preview. I have yet to get a negative comment on it ^_^

At the moment i'm making a standard RPG for WC3 (turn based combat system and everything, and also one nice story line that MAKES SENSE), simply because I've yet to actually see a good RPG on wc3 (sorry, but hero RPG just felt like the story and the characters were....well, not too great. You just felt detacthed) that actually has good characters. They are what make or break a normal RPG.

Anyway, I say Standard RPG BUT with side things. Morrowind is a REALLY good example. It has the main story line (not the best, i'll admit..and you don't really interact with people much...that would be hard with 1000s of NPCs and the biggest world I've ever seen in a game), but also other things you can do. Bit more freedom and ease of killing people though (people died too slowly, making an assassin impossible).

That's true because you haven't played a "real" open RPG. The ones we've had so far all suck pretty hard balls. COT 2 was probably the closest we've come to an Open RPG publically released for WC3.

Really the only good open rpg i have ever played was FFORPG. But if you consider LOAP to be an open rpg then nothing could beat that. Open rpgs last at most an hour, while normal rpgs last long because of the story.

There should be a chain of games where your saved character from one game could be used in anyother game. The first game could be how you help create a village so that traders and civilains could there. Then the second game would be built on that so there would be a solid storyline and fans could make diferant branches of that story.

When i read your discussion... I began to wonder... In which category should i place my Rpg, Lands of Archanor? Its no main storyline, lots of quests, still it seems to last forever, the terrain is good and the heroes cant get unbeatable, there's fields, forests, swamps, mountains, all that stuff, alot of things to do... you can even go fill a vial with water if u wish to, or gather materials and go craft something, and you can also participate in wars that the two main alliances starts at random sometimes... Still i cant place it in any of these categories you have said...

Well like everyone said, if it is a good RPG that fits as open, make it open. Some (more like most) WC RPG's were just not meant to be open.

let me clear things up a bit

open rpgs dont nessescarily have no story, no character development, or repetative gameplay. to have a good open rpg, u need a good branching story that will easily work with the quests ingame. u can have a main quest with optional sidequests, but i would think of this as a standard rpg. u can do things like cinamatics in open rpgs, but ud need a pretty interesting trigger setup

standard rpgs are good because u can have better stories and cinamatics. untill some1 develops the ultimate story system which allows u to do nething and still have a good story (probably as a real comp game in the next few years)

base building and tomes dont have to be unbalanced. rpgs arent about killing other ppl!!! there about the quests, so if u think rpgs are about lvling up and killing every1 else well thats not what the rpgs all about
