"Get it somehow" is a very good option for 3ds max..i took a school course on it...:P..3d modelling..but i got v 4.0 instead of my school's 3.0..and wierdly enough the versions are not as compatible as one would imagine: mainly due to the fact that both are from the same company (discreet)

I vote Milkshape, because it's cheap, and the only one I know how to work. Gotta love Milkshape - it's worked for every modelling project I've done in the last God-knows-how-many years.

lol i find maya the best for everything..but it's not that good when it comes to WcIII ..3ds max is a lil better when it comes to WCIII, but man, maya is loaded with feacher that max has never heard about..maya i find is the best for entertainment..lol it was used in the Maxtrix, and LOTR, and much much more..:D..but then most people can't afford maya since it's like 10x more the cost of 3ds Max...so if ur looking for a good WCIII modling and not high poly modeling..3ds max is the way to go bro

Well... the best are definitely 3d studio max and Maya, both very very good high end progs. Usually it just depends on who you ask, a 3d max user or a maya user. I happen to use both so they are about even for me. But from the looks of it most people here use max..

3DMax. Its the most popular and obviousily the most used 3D package around this forum since warcraft III was made by it. I'd also like to add that 3D is the coolest hobby ever, its both fun and productive since you can later use that as a job.. And have hell of a fun while you'r at it.

i use both too ..but depeds on the quailty and speed of work you want..:D i work fast and low quailty so i use max..when i wanna make hair and stuff that looks real i switch to Maya but they are eqil, just maya has more features :D

Well, who said that max hasnt got those features? And if not available you still can get tons of plugins (e.g. Digimation). I say they are both the same, only in price they vary: 3DSMAX 6 is $3,495 and Maya Unlimited 6 costs $6,999 (whereby Maya Complete 'only' $1,999). But mainly because it already includes the most plugins wich you have to buy for max. So, only big companies (e.g. Moviemaker) have even enough licences for Maya. Other (but still good -> Blizz) use 3dsmax because its cheaper and freely upgradable. So my conclusion: Get max.

I have used 3DSM and Wings at home... Wings is better in my opinion. I don t go by how many features it has or anything like that.. I just go on what I use it for.. 3DSM is excessive for me (price, file size and stuff I dont need it for) So I go with wings.. Though creating WCIII models is starting to intrest me...

Actually this poll was pretty obvous, 3dsmax is the best that's why you need to pay 3000+ $us to be able to sell stuff done with it, or 127 $us to be able to use it, though I only needed 1 dollar...

actually 3ds max 4,5,6,gmax(xept for this 2 last that needs Dex to exports everything correctly even animations, lights, cameras and attachement points) are the best for creating units (in general), but maya is better in the aspect to help create movies, BUT LESS EXPENSIVE! like 6,000$ to 10,000$.
