So I've started a melee map for War of the Three Hammers based on the Loch Modan mines I made for the demo. If I make a couple of these maps, I feel like I want to make them all unique, and part of that is obviously the terrain, but I wanted to make the gameplay dynamics different depending on the locale as well. As a battle within mines, I designed this map as being extremely cramped. There aren't really 'chokepoints' since practically every area could be considered such in a normal map. Also, the building area is small - when I tested it, I had a hard time fitting all my tier 1 Alliance buildings (Town Hall, Altar of Kings, 2 Barracks, Blacksmith, Lumber Mill, Arcane Vault, 6 Farms). Another aspect is the pursuit of gold mines. All gold mines start with below average stockpiled gold, so players are forced to dig forward for more resources. There is a suitable expansion located at the very exit of the initial base, making it an ideal forward defence as well. |

Looks cool. I love that deep chasm with the rail running over it. Really looks sexy. |

And done. I'll try to test it tomorrow if I get the opportunity. |

Are there way-gates to the center, or how do you get there? |

You can cross on those tiny railways. One at a time. I've actually just tested it, and if you get caught on those things, you're in the deep end. EDIT: Of course, while this style of play amuses me to no end, it would probably get blacklisted by most people on Battle.net. I promise my next map will have more maneuverability... But I am not remaking a Lost Temple for War of the Three Hammers. :P |

Oh, sure. The problem is that air units circumvent the cramped nature of the map, so it's pretty much inevitable to go there. The races in the project don't have air units as far as I know, so this map was designed with that in mind. |
