Heinous WE unresponsiveness

I know there have been a few scattereds threads critiquing the speed of WE, but I just have gotten to the point where I can't edit anymore. My map is a scant 300k (compressed into w3m) but it literally takes 3-4 seconds to raise lower a single place of terrain or place a single tree. My system is a Athlon 1600 with 512 DDR RAM, Geforce3 64M on nforce1 mobo. Of course I reduce my view distance, turn off shadows, and lighting, to no avail. I've made half of my map terrain but my development time is increasing exponentially with each doodad I place. What should I do?

Map info: 182x182
Units: 120
Doodads: 2500+
Regions: 27
Trigger: 36

First off - unrelated to your problem: Is that THE Heroes' Quest? The best board game ever? If it is, can't wait to play it!

As for your problem, I'd say close all background programs, turn off all the Windows XP visual effects (in the System area of the control panel - advanced tab) and simply reboot your computer. If you're like me and leave your computer on all the time, it can become quite terrible with memory. If none of these help, I don't know what else you could try.

Good luck.

PS: Your terrain looks great.

If you edit that far zoomed out all the time, that kind of, uh, explains everything :)

Very nice terrain as well, btw.

You obviously didn't read his post! He said he tried zooming in and it didn't help!

Make sure everything else is unloaded (hit ctrl+alt+del and close everything but WE, explorer, and systray), and make sure you don't have antialiasing/verticalsync/anistropicfiltering for your card on.

I actually prefer Zephir's editor for terrain editing. It's not very pretty, but it's fast.

How do you set the view distance?

CHANGE VIEW DISTANCE
Ctrl + Mouse wheel

I tried Zephir's map editor but it crashes hard on startup. Maybe a version issue? I am using v8. Sigh. Even when disabling doodas in the view raising terrain takes 3-4 seconds. Too bad you can't edit terrain in wire-frame mode. Stupid WE doesnt free the memory when hiding things...what is the point? Just to make it easier to see? Weak!
