Just wanted to see what you guys think of the terrain aspect of my new game (TheHelper). Constructive criticism?

I like it, it looks like how Blizzard terrains their maps. The only thing is maybe just a little more detail, such as more doodads (and for trees I think the barrens trees look good mixed in for tropical areas, makes it look more diverse).

Tile variation on the trees is awful. Improve that. As well use more doodads.

Thanks for the comments. I'll put in some more tree variation and doodads :)

In my opinion, normal w3 trees should never be used, in almost any map. There really is no excuse for not using them, even if it be for just a tree or two (or some grass/other doodad). The file size is no con, in fact... when compressed, they are far still far superior to any Blizzard tree you'll find (World tree, and the Sunken Ruins trees, are the only quality ones, tbh). What you have to drill into your head when terraining— if you want it to look good (good = realistic, in the normal sense) at all, you're not going to be using what is in the WE from the start. Warcraft III is not made to look pretty, and this shows in naturally everything that's handed to you.

Use custom doodads.

Disregard above post. Use whatever the fuck you want, it's all really up to what style you want.

I might add your terrain would could actually look good with some more touch up. Remember; the tiny details pays off the most. Just let your imagination fly freely and throw in whatever detail you might think of; statues, graveyards, ponds; anything to break the monotonous feel your terrain has right now.

You mentioned that Sunken Ruins trees are some of the only good ones.. There the ones I'm using lol..

I made some changes to the smaller island, what do you think?

You shouldn't worry too much at all about custom doodads, because if the only way you can terrain is with custom ones then you aren't very good. Anyways, the new screenies are pretty cool looking, the tile variation is good and the doodads are as well.
