Mapping Contest #2

Yes, it is upon us, the second mapping contest - but fear not, for it is not a dreadful theme with a week long time limit like last time. Indeed, there is not a theme at all, but instead constraints, a points scheme, and your own creativity.

Constraints:
- 32x32 map size.
- No bigger than 800kB map size.
- Only resources in the WC3C database or submitted by the timestamp of this post can be used.
- Full credits easily accessible in the map.
- The map must have been started after this post was made, and may not take data from any other map, except allowed system/sample/etc. maps.

Points:
- Enjoyment: 25
- Originality: 15
- Polish: 10

There will be three judges allocating points, and that will decide the overall winner. The deadline will be 12 noon, GMT, Monday 14st July. No submissions after that time will be allowed. It is advisable that you submit it on the Sunday night at the very latest.

Maps may be optimized, but you must also release an 'open source' version of the map if you do so.

You are allowed to make MDX squish models and/or add a camera for the portrait or add attachment points, but nothing more. You cannot create custom textures, models or sounds for this, with the exception of dummies textures (ie: blank). This is because it is a mapping contest. You may however use any resource in the WC3C databases or that is currently submitted, with the exception of maps (obviously).

Prizes:
- 40 rep for first place.
- 24 rep for second place.
- 16 rep for first third place

You may if you wish work with a partner and submit jointly, in which case the prize will be split evenly between the two.

Submitting:

You may submit a maximum of three (3) maps to this contest (although it certainly isn't recommended). One person cannot win more than one prize (which may hit any partners they have - ou have been warned!). Submission is done by creating a thread in the pastebin with the prefix [MAP2].

So, get cracking - hopefully we'll have lots of thinking outside the box and finished maps!

NB: It should be fairly obvious that the resources rule automatically precludes anything you made prior to this post. You cannot use any map you started prior to this contest.

Third place gets 16 I assume. But anyway, might try my hand at this, shall see.

Hmm... I have a few interesting ideas, might take a crack at it. But I'll get -100 in Polish; I can't make any kinds of table, dialog, player drop/leave codes, etc.

So basically, are we making something like Worm War (i.e. small map size, few/no custom stuff, interesting idea, mini-game feel)?

That's entirely up to you. For reference on the imports, by the way, Warlords is 874 KB, despite quite a bit of custom stuff.

Small map size, most definately. 32x32 is one of the constraints (the main one, in fact). Let your creativity run wild with it.

EDIT: And obviously a full credits list is obligatory.

Then if it's not specifically like Worm War, I'm confused. Does it have to do anything? I mean, can it just be, like, a showcase of cool terrain and fx? Or just a heartfelt poem, written in Lightning Smudges, across a 32x32 map, with units acting it out?? Is it supposed to be playable, basically?

I'd use loads of those "confused" smiley's, but I've made a pact to avoid them like the dickens :P.

Technically, it doesn't have to be playable. You could theoretically win with something non-playable. Half the points are, however, for enjoyment, and you only have 32x32; hence, it would seem to me that unless you have a really good idea, you might want to go for mostly playable.

The rules up there are all the rules - suprise me, but remember to bear in mind the three points criteria and their relative importances.

Hmm... Ok, so I don't necessarily have to make a Bnet-playable mini-game thing... That's both comforting and mind-boggling :P.

Is custom natives allowed? ;)

If any triggarars want to join with me on this, i've got a couple of potential ideas for mini game thingies that i'd like to do, but can't due to lack of triggararing.

I thought the 32x32 restriction would be a pain, but it's actually not too bad at all.
