Only full importer I know of is for Max, the Milkshape one only does geometry.

I'm afraid the only answer is the Oinkertools.

i think cinema 4d can open 3ds max files? it can export files as .3ds, but it cant seem to open .mdl

TotallyAwesome
But .3ds can't keep all the data, that is the problem, it will probably only keep the mesh. You can try though, but animations will probably be lost.

I don't know if cinema 4D can export/import FBX (though it should, Maxon is on the list of companies which support the format), but if it can, then use that format. It can export everything, including rigging and animation. So you can use 3ds max 5 to import an mdl with animations and all with ProFeT's blizz importer and then export the fbx to cinema 4D. But I don't know if max 5 can export fbx though...if it can't, then you'll have to stick to static meshes.

that sounds reasonable. what programs will i need for that?

just ProFeT's blizz importer?
