Bomberman Tournament

hey everyone. ive created a bomberman map. im sure you all know how to play bomberman. if you don't, it goes like this:

-plant bombs to blow away blocks and clear a path to your enemies!
-blow up all other players!

in my map you push escape to set bombs. and you move your character like normal (right clicking). there are some powerups you can pickup (+fire and +bomb). +fire will make your bomb's blast radius much farther, and +bomb will let you set more then 1 bomb at once.

you can pick a character to play as. but they are all the same, its just for fun so you can pick whichever one looks best to you.

you can also vote on a stage. currently there are only 2 stages though. i have to work on much more core stuff (like more items) before i make new stages. also the revenge mode is still a work in progress. revenge is, when you die, you can move along the outside of the stage and toss bombs in to blow up the players still alive.

when theres 1 more minute left, the stage gets smaller so watch out!

the first player to win 3 times is the champion!

ive tried my best to make this the best bomberman experience possible. i want the map to look very clean with a great presentation. and also i want to provide the most accurate bomberman gameplay possible!

if you're interested in helping me please download this and try it with your friends. please tell me what you think of it, the speed of the game, the assets used (for bombs and blocks and stuff), the presentation, ideas, and of course any bugs you come across. im sure there are bugs but playing through it myself several times over B.net i think ive gotten rid of most of them. some of the bugs seem to happen when people leave at key points (like during character selection) but i think ive fixed that for good.


so now, on to the map:

and please dont hold back. ive made a couple other maps before that were terrible so please tell me if this one is bad too

Okay just to let you know this first, I tried it by myself and not online so therefore (of course) I can't discuss online gameplay.

However, the mechanics of the game and so forth is pretty solid and I have to say I like it a lot. You say this but perhaps a few more items will speed up gameplay. as just fire and bomb isn't too interesting. For example (this is probably going to be much later but anyway), a "kick" ability like in the actual game Bomberman, where if you take it you are allowed to kick bombs when you touch it the opposite way you're facing.

For the map which has no blocks (the blank one), perhaps the items should RANDOMLY spawn? It's more of a contest who can click the fastest when they're all just there. And if you could, Computer Bombermen would be incredible :) Lastly, if you want, the powerups don't have to be actual items and you can make it so that when a player runs onto that block they get it (instead of just right-click).

Anyway, hope my comments were still useful even though I didn't test too much about online gameplay. I like this map a lot so hope it gets updated soon!

thanks for taking the time to look at my map! i cant believe i never thought about computer AI. i know it will take some work but ill make sure you can play this game with computers! i try to do that with all my maps, so im surprised i never thought of it for this one!

and yea the items right now is temporary, my plan is to just walk onto the grid space to get the item, and its going to be random and stuff.


if you have some friends that know how to play bomberman please try this map with them!!

You probably may also want to think about using a custom bomb model. Any estimate of the date for the next update (with more items preferably)?

EDIT: Okay sweet, I got a public test with approximately 7 people. Here's some points:

Pros
  • exiting and always fun gameplay throughout whole game for everyone there
  • items strongly affected gameplay, as well as revenge (meaning good variety in things players can do)
  • clear map used as a quick way to get wins, have laughter at amount of bombs and also as quick games (instead of the long normal map)
  • amazing features for a BETA atm which resembles bomberman a lot

Cons
  • revenge didn't always work...pressing escape once made bombs usually about 3 spaces away from you, or sometimes A LOT. Also, one time I had 0 bombs as a couatl and I couldn't create any bombs, was that supposed to happen?
  • same spots for some players all the time, which is boring and sometimes unfair (like on the 6x5 map, players around the middle...may give an advantage as they can spread out in any direction basically
  • too much lag? i've seen revengers cast bomb like over 10 tens at the same spot and it was like BOOM BOOM BOOM..perhaps lower the cooldown and sizes of the model
  • for cosmetics, make soft blocks vulnerable and not produce 6 food

All I can think about for now, except maybe a block that needs more than 1 bomb explosion to take it down for fun (randomization = fun!). Hopefully it helped!

EDITEDIT: Oh crap! Forgot the hugest con of all: Add it so it displays when a leaver leaves (even though leaderboard already fixes)!

wow thanks a bunch for the input! cosmetics was actually very low on the list (i wanted to get everything working right before i use custom models and stuff)

im not sure when a new update will come. prior to starting this thread i hadnt worked on this in a LONG time. so i not only have to get used to all my scripts and triggers again ( i left comments to myself but i still have to figure everything out again ), ive got to check on my old list of things to do and rearrange my priorities.

my goal will be to have a new version of the map with bugfixes/new things implemented (most of which you suggested) in 2-3 weeks.

looking at my map notes, when i was working on this map awhile ago apparently revenge mode was still a work in progress.. which most likely explains the bugs you had with it. my goal with revenge mode is so that when you push escape, the bomb will automatically fly and land on the head of a player if hes in that row or column. but the aiming still taking alot of work.

also next on my list (my list from way back) i had planned to implement more items, starting with +speed and 'kick'. and i also planned to create a 3rd stage, with arrows on the ground so bombs kicked to those spaces will move in the direction of the arrow. im not sure if i will push these farther back or not, but im going to work on fixing revenge mode now (which from my memory was a nightmare and could have been the reason i stopped working on this map for awhile).

i will be back here by then, but i will probably still check this thread every few days. thank you SO MUCH for showing interest in my map
