New Project - MDM Monopoly - Information Here!

MrDoomMaster
I am creating a new map called MDM Monopoly. This will be a map like no other, everyone will come to love it. I have extreme ideas for this map and the possibilities for players will be endless. I have a full list of soon-to-be features below:

Interface (Terrain):

As you progress through the more expensive properties through the board, you will notice more pleasant terrain. It will start from damaged ground and dead trees to peaceful grassy land as you approach the Boardwalk. There will also be a great number of doodads in place to give the terrain some sparkle.

Also included will be random weather effects. I have not decided if each space will have it's own weather effect, or if there will just be timed random global weather effects. But do expect exotic weather effects.

Gameplay:

Gameplay will go EXACTLY as it does in the real board game, with a few minor changes to adjust to warcraft. Usually when you are unable to purchase property, or if you chose NOT to buy it, then you would have to auction off the property. Yet, in MY version, you will battle to the death for the property instead of auctioning. Also, camera movements will play a VERY large role in this version of monopoly. You will notice extremely attractive camera motion as you move your unit across spaces taking advantage of the terrain your piece is moving through. As you land on a space, you will get a dialog containing information on that piece of land, as well as options to buy it or duel for it. There will be a maximum of 8 players allowed to play at once, either computer or real human players. This map will most definitely be able to be played on battle.net. When a foe becomes bankrupt, your piece will then slaughter him if he can not pay his debts, and the game is over for him!

You will be able to buy houses and hotels, and mortage your property. There will also be trading allowed.

Things i have yet to figure out:

I am still debating on how i am to give the information on each property. There is no way that i know of to just have a bunch of text displayed in a dialog... you can only put dialog buttons on it for now, and the text on the dialog button isn't even wrapped. If someone could figure a good way to display the information for a piece of property without using the Game - Display Text function, then i would be greatly appreciative! All suggestions will be considered!

Don't expect any exact release date. This will take me a few weeks at least, considering that I will be the only one working on the triggers for this map. Fear not everyone, this map will most definitely amaze you. I will totally be dedicated every hour of every day to making this map. I will also have a select few to beta test this map when ready, but that is a long way down the road.

Also keep in mind the terrain will be brought to you by Kieth, my extremely worthy Unit and Terrain designer. I will be doing only triggers.

I hope everyone will love this map when it comes out. It will be so extremely interactable that i can't even find the words to express it. Every aspect will be emphasised and beautiful, from simple rocks to the entire game play.

User Imput:

Please, everyone, continue to check back at this thread. This is where i will be posting updates for the project along with screenshots as soon as i have some available for you guys. I would appreciate it more than anything if people could express any ideas they would like in this project. I will have a special credits section of the map initialized by typing a certain string (like -credits for example) that will list everyone who contributed to the map. If you have good ideas, expect to see your name in the credits!

If you are wanting to do something in the map, such as creating custom unit skins or working on terrain, i'm not sure if i'll allow this. I really don't want to create this into a HUGE group project. I would rather keep this strictly between Kieth and I. The best i can do is put your ideas into this map if they help. Sorry, but i can't accept any other members to this project. I really do appreciate the thoughts (if any are given) though.

I can't really think of anything else to say, so start posting your ideas! If you have any questions, please ask them! I'll be more than happy to answer questions!

Question: When you are going to battle to the death, who's doing the job? Heroes? Microing? Or somethin' else?

Idea: Why not create your own names for each property, like Dalaran or Black Rock or something.

Answer to question:

When the heroes battle, the player will have control of his/her unit. So far i've decided to make every piece have the EXACT same stats, just different skills. Each will have 3 non-uber skills. The battling will be quite balanced.

Comment on Idea:

Nice idea, i'll use it :)
I'll have to think of some creative names.

That map had some awfull terrain and very poor use of variables and triggers. It was much larger then it needed to be and had an unfun gameplay. I look forward to a better rendition of the game.

My monopoly map will be 128x128 (playable) as well, but you will notice MUCH better terrain.

Anyone have any suggestions of what i could use to make the Railroad space look like it's actually a railroad?

instead of railwaroads u could use warcraft stuff
wat about the ogre juggernaut, the boat, the goblin zepplin and maybe the steam tank

You can have each side of the board featuring a different race. So the human side will have stuff like Dalaran, Stratholme, and stuff and they can have a ship railroad. Then the night elf side can have places like the world tree, barrow dens, and stuff and have a ballista railroad?

Understand fundamentally what MONOPOLY is. IT IS NOT anything fun after a while, for the SOLE PURPOSE that 99% of the game is the DICE.

Once you realize this however, you can still use monopoly as a base for your own CREATIVE INPUT to make the game better.

1) The dueling sucks. You should just be able to auction, its ez.

List a price, starting at 10% of the list price.

Someone types bid, and condition that $ >= price.

Raise price by 10% of the original list price.

Example:

Boardwalk: listprice = 400 (i think i cant remember)

40?
BID
80?
BID
120?
BID
etc.
440
Going Once!
Going Twice!
SOLD

Your map should be creative. What about instead of chance and comm. chest, you added play cards, that could be played at the beginning of everyones turn? example of a play card would be:

(im just rushing ideas i dont reccomend you use these
btw: i gave you sum flavor text!
yoou can make it so that cards = quests and u can have 6 at a time)

(this is a hard one but an example)

Bidding War:

"<i> Bidding wars often backfire. </i> "
Set an amount for a property you do not currently own.
Property owner must elect one of your properties and set an amount.
Each player then, starting with you, must set an amount greater than the last amount previously set, or decline. The player who does not decline, if the opponent, keeps the property he designated. If you, you keep the property you designated. After this, the amount designated is billed to the player that recieved property.

Hostile Takeover:

"<i> "He does own the building, Jim!" </i> "

Pay 2.5 times the list price of any property owned by any entity (includes bank) to own it.

Second Chance:

"<i> Luck be a lady, tonight! </i>"
Re-roll any roll.

Give Fate a Nudge:
"<i> Anything is possible, provided the funding. </i> "
Designate x. Change the number of your roll by X. Pay |x|*(100).

Pushover:
"<i> Collusion is one of the dirtiest tactics, and one of the most costly. </i> "
Designate x. Change the number of ANY roll by X. Pay |x|*(300).

Blind Auction:
"<i> Why can't I see? </i>"
Designate a property owned by the bank. Each player types a number, (you can use allied chat or all chat if you want or fake things)

Highest number keeps property and pays that amount.

Gone to Goto Go:
"<i> What goes well stays well. Or something like that. </i>"
Move directly to go.

Double Roll:
"<i> One good turn deserves another. </i>"
Roll again after your first roll. Spaces you land on do not count for purposes of penalties.

Downsizing:
"<i> Bad management leads to bad decisions; for competitors. </i>"
Every player must choose a color set they own. If they do not own one, they gain $200. Destroy all houses or hotels on specified color sets.

Switcheroo:
"<i> Assassinate, inherit, repeat. </i>"
Switch places with any player token.

Selective Placement:
"<i> Putting competitors in bad situations almost guarantees success. </i>"
Play this before your diceroll. If you land on a square owned by another player, place theyre token anywhere on the board. They must pay half of rent costs if applicable.

Christmas Bonus:
"<i> Money is the heart of our operations. </i>"
Recieve $500 if you pass go this turn, for every time you pass go this turn.

Secret Decision:
" <i> Often times the highest rewards require the most risks. </i>"
Every player designates a number x. Each player puts x*50 into a pot. The player with the lowest number puts all the money into the pot.

Then each player designate a number y. The player with the highest amount destroys amount of properties y to take the pot.

High Stakes Gambling:
"<i> Money is a huge influence in any casino. </i>"
Every player designates a number x. They must pay x*100 into a pot. Then each player gets x number of die rolls. The highest roll wins all the money in the pot + a 1000$ bonus.

If there are multiple players in a tie, then only the die's that are tied are re-rolled until only one player takes all the money.

Fixed Auction:
"<i> By influencing the seller, we can win before the auction starts! </i>"
At any auction, pay the list price before the auction starts to own it immediately.

If other players play this card at the same time, an auction starts at the list price between those players.

Collapsing Empires:
"<i> When it is on the verge of collapse; SELL. </i>"
The pot starts with 1000 $. Players may destroy one house to place an additional 100 into the pot. Players who do not destroy a house cannot collect the pot and it is destroyed. The player that places the most amount into the pot wins.

Skyscraper Sale:
"<i> And the lord said, buy, buy, buy. Just dont let the buildings fall. </i>"
All property sets have hotels on them for $500 each for one time.

Mudslinging:
"<i> For every action, an equal and opposite reaction exists. </i>"
Destroy one house for 200 dollars. The player that loses the house collects this card.

Antitrust Suit:
"<i> It's all fine until you start winning. </i>"
The player with the most amount of money on hand keeps 200 and places the money into a pot. The highest dice roll keeps it.

Generic Industry:
"<i> Warfare approaches the formless. If you are formless, then the wise cannot plot against you; spies cannot destroy you. </i>"

Change the color of a property to any of the 8 property set colors, or black. Treat this property as if it were part of the set.

Monopolization:

"<i> Our products are just so good, noone feels the need to compete with us! </i>"

Buy any property for 4 times the list price. If you buy a property set, keep the developments.

etc. (wow that was alot of idea on my part)

but all that matters is that even if it was exactly like real monopoly to the letter and felt like it, it still sucks. Put something creative into thinking. What about a square with a shop, where you could buy cards for $$?

oh i got it! use inventory for card holding, use item to use card, and card descriptions go in F9!!

there

that should be a good map if you made balanced cards with modified squares and different things.

lol i think as i type cuz my typin = fast

ok should be a good map glad to see makers that are making boardgames/gameshows and trying to refine ideas.

Nice ideas yet... by doing this i wouldn't be making a monopoly game :)

Sorry i can't incorporate such major changes into the game. This wouldn't even be monopoly if i did so. I will make minor changes to the terrain and cards, but everything else will remain the same. I had earlier decided that dueling AND auctioning will be available... yet im still thinking about not adding dueling at all. Depends on what people say about it in this post.

SECONDLY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:

Kieth is having a few computer problems and is unable to use WE-Nolimits to bypass doodad/unit limitations on the map. This means i need another person to replace him that can work on terrain. Here are a few things i look for:

1. The person doing terrain needs to be able to take orders, yet take advantage of his privileges. (basically this means if i say don't delete this and that unit... you don't do that, but you emphasis everything else i said nothing about)

2. The person doing terrain needs to have extreme experience in doing terrain. I want this person to create a monopoly terrain that makes people go OMFG!!!!!! Make them a terrain that keeps them comming back for more :)

I would truly appreciate any offers i can get on terrain editing. If you wish to apply, please post screenshots of your work. I will need some sort of proof of your skills, and screenshots are most recommended.

thanks everyone!

Obviously it needs some creativity. Monopoly made me sleep on the table. It gets very boring rolling the dice and doing the same thing over again.

I was thinking instead of a square board, make it like an RPG. You have a path (a circular path, as long as 2 sides meet) and make nice terrain. So you pass through a winter terrain? It looks really nice. It also allows different effects to the game.

This might be extra, but whenever goes on a square where there's a hotel or somethin', why not make a short cinematic instead of just sucking the money away? For example, in the winter, there's a house there. A person lands, and the people living in the house starts killing the guy.

Cinematics for each space you land on sound nice, yet it could cause many problems, and is really not worth the trouble. It would mainly require 40 triggers JUST for cinematics for each space, and would add a few KB to the map size. Not to sound lazy, but it's really inappropriate to take animations to such a level.

I have changed a few things about how the map will work:

I never mentioned that every feature will be in dialog form, every action you choose will be at the click of a button. All descriptions will be in the dialog as well.

I have also decided that letting the player have control of the camera movements during game play would offer a more privileged perspective of the environment around the board.

that is really all i have to say so far. I want everyone to know that i really can't start programming the map until the terrain is fully complete. Anyone want to help with terrain?

You can't start without the map? Just place a bunch of regions for your squares and maybe make some very crude terrain so you can visualiz the game board when your working. Then you can always change the terrain later. Just get the regions you want on a basic outline of the terrain and then decorate it later. I could give terraining a shot though but I don't know exactly what you want.
