Why did blizzard make the same limit on lan as on bnet? What good reason did blizzard have to do this? Afraid of piracy? Afraid custom games may own regular warcraft?

I am really sorry if this question have been asked before but i couldent find any threads regarding this question. And again i am really sorry.

Why are you asking us? What makes you think we'd know? Ask Blizzard.

Cause someone might know a review or anything where they asked blizzard. Or someone might know some information or have asked blizzard themself.

Why i am asking you? Cause most of the people here play warcraft 3 and i have the biggest chance on getting an answer here.

When you have seen the things I have seen in the WC3 engine, stuff like this seems far more sensible.

I dont know anything in the engine but i believe in you. And it seems like a reasonable purpose to make the limit 4MB.

Probabbly because Bnet cant handle the lag of many people playing a map that big?

They never thought that maps would be bigger in filesize, and this was decided to not make maps to have insanely large filesize. And this was decided by Blizzard since first wc3 version, and will never be changed. 4mb was just a size limit they did put on multiplayer maps.

But luckily there's no limits for singleplayer maps. Also if the local lan settings allowed larger filesize than 4mb, blizzard will have competed with network tunneling softwares and network programs that create fake local networks over the internet.

This is why the limit is same for b.net as in local area network. Why precicely 4mb? Well that I cannot answer you and the blizzard only can answer you this question most correctly. In my opinion I think 1 reason is to keep dl'ing time on b.net at the acceptable pace for custom maps.

I can't find the article on b.net forums says all the reasons for 4mb limit :/ I think they lost most of the forum data's recently.
