This is a pic of my bard. I know it is basically a recolor of the Medivh model, but tell me what you think.

Edit: BTW this is not the finished version. I enhanced the gold some and changed his staff. I can't alpha the staff out like I want, but hey, can't have everything.

Its a good recolor... though, calling him a bard is a little too great of a title, lol. He looks more like a jester.

I suppose when I think of a bard I think of Thom Merillin from the Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan and his gleeman's cloak. Several of my friends actually commented that this re-coloring was very reminiscent of that very thing. So, at least in my mind, I achieved the desired goal.

I guess we all have different ideas of what a "bard" should look like. According to the online game EQ my bard should be in blue plate mail armor. I guess I am a throw back to the more original meaning of bard which is that of a Celtic lyric or minstrel poet most usually dealing with the legendary exploits of chieftains and heroes. It also refers to the practice of covering meat with bacon or fat to preserve moisture during cooking. We still do this today with our filet mignon. It is because of this "covering" that bard eventually came to refer to the armor worn by horses to preserve them in battle.

Having said that, you are correct in saying that it was common place for a court jester or fool to dress in motley colors to draw attention or mock the more reserved dress commonplace at court. However, as dyes were very expensive in the middle ages when jesters were fixtures of the nobleman's court, the color of their garb was much less flamboyant than we have given them credit for in modern cinema. Also, as you no doubt noted, the model Medivh (the bard) is wearing a full length cloak. Jesters almost never employed such in their wardrobe. It would have been very expensive and detracted from the foolish antics for which they are famous. If one were to wear a cloak it would have been very short almost pathetically so to enchance their clownish appearance. In my opinion, though my model is brightly colored, he does not appear clownish.

I see where you're coming from and the bard's style of choice is nicely explained. Still, on a first impression basis, it still looks like a Jester, dispite the historical accuracies.

If you are going to give him some color to his robes, I suggest you keep a nice color theme rather than spreading out a "rainbow" of colors.

If you choose to use green, then use different variants of green ranging anywhere from the darkest deep blue-green, to the lightest yellow-green.
