I started modeling and I have no idea where to find the poly count for my crappy model, so uh, where exactly do I find it?
Also, the model saves as .chr and .max, what programs are needed to convert to .mdl > .mdx?

Polycount:
In max versions older than 9, you can find a polycounter utility in the Utilities tab -> More...
In max versions 9 and newer, you can turn on the polygon count in the viewport by right clicking on the viewport's name in the upper-left corner, go to the properties and there go to Statistics and turn them on.

For mdx:
Max 4 & 5 -> Art Tools
Max newer than 5 -> see Dex Exporter (though it's pretty tricky)

Neat, both works, also, how much poly is considered low poly?

a footman is like 600 polys? more then 1000 is a lot, even for heros.
