Is This Safe?

Step 4 - Changing Map Settings:
To make our loading screen complete, we need to modify the map slightly. This wont have any impact on your map except for the loading screen changes.
In the main World Editor windows (where you see terrain), go into Scenario -> Map Options. Here you need to change the dropdown Game Data Set to Melee (Latest Patch).
Hidden information:

The reason for this change is to make the map load without "Press Any Key" in multiplayer and LAN. It does accomplish this...but at what cost?

If that option does what I think it does then it might ruin your map's balancing. Usually if a new patch updates a value in the object editor for melee balancing, it will not be updated in maps created previously to that patch. But when using that option it might be possible that the map always uses the latest (patched) default values.
Changed (= pink) values should stay the same though.

I would bet that widgitized maps are immune to being forced to use the latest melee data.

I only use custom objects. Does that make it a moot point?

Anything else this option does, other than intended effect and melee object changes?

Melee gameplay constants update. Stuff like drain spells being able to transfer mana to allies and other updates that came with later patches.

So...sounds like I shouldn't care...am I right?

On a side note, does anyone know why this change makes the loading screen automatically start as opposed to "Press Any Key" functionality?

Default is "Based on map Melee status", thus I would presume it's because maps that are set to use the latest Melee data are presumed to be Melee maps, who's loading screen text doesn't much matter.

Good point. So does this affect custom things in anyway, shape, or form?

Other than possibly base balance of units, I highly doubt it.

Gameplay constants affect all abilities, regardless of whether they are custom or not.

But if I have "Use Custom Gameplay Constants" checked...then what? You didn't think I was using the default ones did you . I hope I don't come across as beating a dead horse, but I want to make damn sure that there won't be any unintended consequences down the line.

This is a neat trick for all of you by the way, provided it is indeed safe. Who wants the "Press Any Key" anyway?

Unchanged constants will probably still use the latest patch.
Everything "non-pink" will probably use patched values. Same for custom units/items as they are always based on a default unit.

Can you elaborate on this one? So my "pink" objects are susceptible to being changed?

Fuck?

Why don't you just save your map, do the change, then save the map as a new file. Restart WE and load your newest version, then check yourself if it changed anything. That's what I'd do.

That's what I've done, and I can't tell any differences...yet. It's that yet that is bothering me. My goal with this thread was to learn as much about this change as possible. For instance, I'll be giving "Gameplay Constants" some more scrutiny.
