Exactly! add something new inside! i think it can be great, it doesn't have to take the clasic monopoly look, making it more "warcraftish", more old.
could make it like a trade route and each player is a trader! :]
thing can be work great, and something knew to try out in worldeditor :]

First off, a monopoly styled game is going to require a LOT of triggering, and also, if you go forward with this, here is an idea: [ Make the characters into heroes with lots of abilities that do the fallowing: gain more gold from passing go, lower prices on buildings, chance to steal gold from other players, ect. You could make the heroes gain XP from doing deals or from killin creeps that appear constantly. Instead of waiting turns, you could make the hero stuck in his square, while getting attacked, until its his turn again. That would make other players want to use their turns more quickly to prevent other heroes from leveling up.] Any way, just some ideas.

Wouldn't take a lot of triggering.

I've seen a similar monopoly game on WC that needing nothing more than triggering turns, events, and such :p.

You just need some simple systems so turns, buying and selling(auctioning?) run smoothly. Since you want to embrace the WC theme, ofc there can be special buildings that provide bonuses other than income and yeah, you can be attacked whenever you enter a square where you must fight monsters until it's your turn again. This can lead to some strategy where if players take their time, they end up leveling up enemy players and losing out on exp and a player can play faster to decrease said amount! You could get buildings that hired creeps to increase the amount of monsters players might have to fight, making it more difficult. If your hero did die ofc, you wouldn't lose them, just get a big medical bill from the mage who revived you :p.

I think it'd be good if you made the simple monopoly first and then introduce buildings and new strategies and systems that changed the way the game is played(getting locked in a square to fight, maybe keeping it all entirely turn based, having a side battle going on[maybe your a trader/investor that's funding a war!])! Things like this would make it really interesting, making it more than just another map or monopoly for that matter. It'd be really creative and awesome if executed well.

However, it would make this WC Monopoly more of a strategic survival than what the game really is though... but it'd be bringing something new I guess.

I have made the game "Mensch Ärger Dich Nicht" (German) or in english, I guess its something like "Don't Get Angry".

Even bots were able to play it. However, I do not doubt Monopoly would be a great game.

Yes, that is exactly what i was going to do: First make a nice "clean" base system to work, than shape it:]
i pretty much wanted to avoid this all free combat, if it will be boring, than i'll had too.
in the original the squares can be:
land to buy and upgrade.
big companys or something like that wich give incoming i dunno.
and suprize cards, or traps cards and good cards..
i was thinking of adding:

ability squares, wich can give u a "medium" ability to use on others or ur self, such as preventing from moving for 1 turn or getting a double score on the dice roll wich can be used for u or others.

item squares wich can be saved for later use in the inventory, these item can act as a oneshot ability or coupons :D.
and also there can be a super ability square wich is only 1 square or 2 in the whole map :]]
so what you think?
