MPQ extraction problems

I just started to play with spell editing, and I'm kinda stumped.

I'm using WinMPQ version 1.6. I was able to install it, and get it running ok. I can extract the files fine, and I can view the:
*.slk or the *Func.txt files ok, but The *Strings.txt files show up with all these strange characters. I'm using Excel 2000 to view the txt files. Here's an example:

// Tank Drop Pilot
[Atdp]
Name=드ë¡_ 조종사
Tip=드ë¡_ 조종사|cffffcc00( P)|r
Ubertip="ÃÂ*˜„재 조종사를 ë‚ ´ë³´ë‚ ´ë©´ ìÂ?´ ì °¨ë Ÿ‰ì Â?€ ê ³µê²©ë_¥ìÂ?„ 잃게 ëÂ?˜ê³_ 다시 장갑 ìËâ€*˜ì†¡ì„_으로 ë°â€?뀌게 ëÂ?©ë‹Ëâ€*다."
Hotkey=P

I figure it has to do with the Excel's conversion, but I have no idea how to fix it. It keeps on defaulting to Windows ANSI conversion when I go to open the file.

Any suggestions?

thx for the help

dont use excell to view txt files, use notepad or word, if using word (or excell) make sure it is using plain ascii.

Sorry I didn't say, but when it didn't work in Excel, I tried Word, Notepad, and Wordpad, without success.

Update: Weird. If I pull the *string.txt files from war3.mpq, I can view them, but the war3patch.mpqs are the ones I'm having the problem with.
