Space Commander: Special Ops

Captain Griffen
Space Commander:
Special Operations

The Setting:

Out in deep space, beyond where the Imperium really gives a damn, no one can hear you scream. This is quite unfortunate on one level, because there's a lot to make you scream, but on the other hand, there's not a lot of friends to hear your screams. Just more enemies.

'tis not pretty, out in the colonies.

However, strange things are afoot, and the Imperium is starting to wonder whether leaving large areas of space almost unpatrolled is really such a good idea. Of course, mobilising the mighty navy would cause a lot of unnecessary panic. Besides, they'd need to remember how to mobilise.

No, much better to send a small strike force to assess the situation. So, as one of their new cruisers comes off the production line, they decide to hand it over the decrepit Terran Colonial Navy, under the condition that it is used to investigate the troubling rumours coming in.

That leads us here, to the TCS Cerberus, on her priority mission to investigate the threats to the Imperium.

Of course, clearly it would be inappropriate for the TCN to immediately put this ship into use for clearing out, say, it's pirate problem. Thus its first mission is most definitely not to wipe out that pirate base. It's just going to accidentally stumble across it. And then blow it up.

The Ship:

The Terran Colonial Ship Cerberus, armed with a variety of point defence systems, missiles, gun batteries, and a number of Viper-class fighter-bombers.

The point defence systems are vital for stopping enemy torpedoes and missiles blowing up that lovely new hull. The missile and gun batteries are variously effective against different types of foes - from fighters to cruisers.

All weaponry systems can be individually damaged, and are positioned in different areas of the ship. This means they can take damage at differing rates, and also have different coverages. You should use this to your advantage on other capital ships - for example, should you knock out the point defence systems on one side of the ship, pummelling it with torpedos would get a whole lot easier.

The fighters are also an interesting matter. They can fly sorties, equiped with a range of different missiles. Since the missiles carry start off with the momentum that the fighter has, coming in with a fast attack run can make it a lot more likely that the missile with penetrate the point defence sytem.

However, if you're carrying out a nuclear bombing run, you maybe might want to give yourself enough room to get clear, capiche?

The Crew:

The crew is the heart and soul of any ship. And they're also you guys. You can die, but then you can be revived again. Fortunately, recent breakthroughs in technology mean that pilots can be miraculously teleported out of a fighter moments before it is destroyed. Technology, huh?

Captain: He's in charge, with the power to promote / demote others. Is also by default the pilot, but can change that position, and perform any other task.

Pilot: Flies the TCS Cerberus, as well as controlling some of the main guns.

Engineer: Keeps systems running, manages power consumption, repairs, etc.

Deck Officer: Keeps the fighter-bombers armed, repaired, and refueled, and ready to fly.

Crewmen:: Pilot fighters, man gunnery systems, repel boarders.

First Deployment:

The first mission will be a shakedown run. Yes, again. Yes, it will be done right next to that pirate base we've been asking the Imperials to take down for months. Well, I guess that means it might need to be taken down in the course of the mission. That'd be a darned shame.

Second Deployment:

Hush, Mr Teenage Revolutionary - you lured all of us over to your site with big promises, and than failed - spectacularly - to deliver. Shame on you! *wags the Shame Stick at De.Facto*

I like the way you have player interactions set up, with the designated commander and so on. The idea as a whole sound great, but to bring it to how I'm (and I think you) are imagining it will take loads of work.

So far, seems good though. But boarding, meh. >.>
