Changing the model file on trees?

Changing a barrel (destructible) into a different file works with no problem. Changing a tree (destructible) into something else don't, even if it's original models.
The problem arises as I'm trying to place some custom trees. It works if I place a barrel with the new model, but then it won't behave like a tree, in which I need it to.

Any ideas?

change the "model file - variations to 1" and "model - has lightweight model" to false.

Fantastic. Specifying one variation worked!
Thank you! :)

One advantage while I had it as a doodad was that I could choose scale on x, y and z independently. Now they're constrained in proportions. Some way to remove this constraint with destructibles?

No. But you can always use doodads for trees and add the tree shadow with an destructable based on pathing blocker (large) and changed shadow texture, such as the model changed to invisible platform (so that the annying box disappears in WE).
