is is possible to convert .mdx files into .3ds, .max, or .obj? i understand that .blp can be converted to .tga but would this still be usable for above extensions?

It is likely possible although I'm unsure how. What version of 3DS Max you use and what tools you have installed? Perhaps one of BlinkBoy's programs could work, or maybe there is such an option in Art Tools, but they work only for 3DS Max 4 and 5 afaik.

The mdx import/export plug-in for 3ds max should convert a .mdx file directly to .3ds (or .max) within max, and can then be used to export it. I would recommend that you avoid using the plug-in with 3ds MAX 2011, however.

The plug-in can be found here:

Installing the plug-in is very simple:

1. Unzip the files to a folder on your desktop.
2. Navigate to Local Disk (C:) -> Program Files -> Autodesk -> 3dsMAX -> Scripts -> Startup
3. Cut and paste the impexpmdx script files in the Startup Folder.
4. In 3dsMAX, open up the utilities panel (hammer icon), scroll down to the utilities drop-down list, and select impexpmdx.
5. Scroll down further and you'll find the button to import and the button to export, along with some settings. Note: the read-me attached with the download tells you how to import and export.

Apparently it also works with Gmax but I don't know how.
