Combining Models

Can someone tell me how I could combine two models? I've searched a lot and have not found a tutorial on how to do so. If your wondering what I mean, its like take one part of two models and combine them like here. -->

I remember this tutorial, although it is fairly old, there may be better ways to do it. For example, I'm pretty sure you can do step 2 in that tutorial using mago's model editor rather than having to import the model into 3Dstudio max. Look around the modeling and mdl editing tutorial sections to see if you can find better information.
