Unstabability of the WE

For some reason I'm having instability problems with the world editor. Randomly, the program will lock up my computer, which is a huge problem if I haven't saved the map recently. Also, half of the time when I start up the program, it doesn't start. It doesn't even pop up with the loading screen. I have to hit ctrl alt delete, stop the program from 'trying' to run, and then restart it again.

Anyone else having similar problems and know of a way to fix them?

An where might I find that? And why do I have to hack around a CD I actually have? ;)

98SE.

And I believe the error I'm getting (it pops up in the errors folder afterward) is:

This application has encountered a critical error:

Not enough storage is available to process this command.

Program: C:\PROGRAM FILES\WARCRAFT III\WORLDEDIT.EXE
Object: .PAVCWETriggerFunction@@

well DjBnBlack told me not to post the no-cd crack but its easy to find if you search the web. But it fixs most of the issues like strange slow down in the middle of map editing (progressively getting worse) really long load time and others. Ofcourse getting a faster cd-rom drive may do the trick. Its also recomended that you back up the worldedit which was uncracked as when you update it will say the checksum is screwy. So you don't have to reinstall.

I think worldedit requiring the cd is just a dumb protective measure they added. Its also odd that the game requires the cd becuase the game has all its files on the computer. Its dumb check (you'll notice while playing the cd doesn't spin at all atleast in SC the music was on the cd...).

Ah, yes, you know it doesn't spin CD -- but if you take it out in the middle of the game it still bitches ;) The protection is to make sure people can't rampantly copy their games (duh) although I agree with you about WE, even though my copy works fine.

Make sure your video drivers are the latest, make sure you have patch, try reinstalling, try running with no startup items.

Looks like RAM problems to me, maybe an (old) video card issue.
I also have Win98SE, and I have 128 RAM, 700 MHz and an NVida Vanta, but I make VERY darn sure that there's no bull$h.. running that I don't need, like a messenger I'm not logged into or the Realplayer icons. I have yet to have that problem, even when running Warcraft III (the actual game, for testing), Excel for .slk editing, BigMPQ, Internet Explorer (for this site, pretty much), my antivirus and firewall, and even sometimes my old beta map in the WE that I copy triggers from.

I suggest:
  • getting RAM (256 is good if you don't run too much extra crap)
  • making sure your Virtual Memory (spare RAM on hard drive) is set to unlimted (the "Let Windows manage my Virtual Memory settings" option should work fine)
  • getting a new graphics card
  • running Windows Update
  • reinstalling the game (be sure to back up all your maps and custom files and everything)
  • checking Blizzard's site (they have a list of graphics card driver places, be sure to check that out)
  • reinstalling Windows

Actually, that error I posted was an old one, it was one that popped up when I was altering a beta map to work with retail. So ignore that.

As for RAM and graphics card, I really don't think those are my problems. I have over 400 MB of RAM, and a GEForce3. My memory was already set to have windows manage it, and yet still whenever I open up the WE, it doesn't load. Again, I have to stop the process and reload it before it starts working. And it crashes occasionally in the middle of editing as well, freezing my comp.

The only 'weak points' on my machine seem to be my sound card and internet connection. I have DSL and an external sound card, both of which use USB ports, so I don't know if that effect anything (I certainly get choppy music whenever my comp is downloading something large.) But I don't see how that would effect the editor loading.
