Anyway Off Topic.

Spiked Carapace as far as I recall is the only ability that can increase a units base armour.
However setting the return damage to 0 doesnt seem to actually remove the returned damage. Setting targets to none doesnt appear to have any effect either.

Anyway possible way to increase base armour? (reversibly, hence upgrades are no no)

You recall incorrectly, I just tested it and Spiked Carapace adds bonus armour to the Crypt Lord, it does not increase base armour.
