Query regarding mpx and 3ds

I apologize, but I'm a bit of a newbie at all this but am eager to learn what I can.

Currently I'm running 3ds max 4 on win 2000. I have used the mpq viewer to extract the various files and have tried to use the converter to convert the mpx's to 3ds files. The only trouble is the 3ds files do not seem to want to open up in 3ds. I get an error message whenever I try to, even though the conversion seems to have worked without errors.

If anyone could offer some aid, I would be truly grateful.

easy answer when you create a new scene 'import model' not open file..cause open file opens scenes not models and 3ds files are model files :-) if this doesn't work....*shrug*

Firstly they're not mpx files they're mdx files. Secondly if they don't work check the files start with MDLX. You can just open them in notepad, for the most part it should look like rubbish except it should start with MDLXVERS. Check that to see if it works. Also, I recommend the maxscript file over the mdx to 3ds converter just because of ease of use, and it shows objects only when they're supposed to be shown.

Ah thank you both very much, I'm still trying to learn all this slowly but surely.
