How big is "too big"?

What would be the maximum size of a map on bnet, byte wise, that you would sit an download?

Without a single trigger, a single region or a single modified unit, my map (terrain alone) has brought the file size up to 300kb (256x256 ~5000doodads as of now) and my terrain is only 50% complete. Now with all my custom units I am going to be editing, extra doodads I'll be placing, triggers I'll be triggering and custom abilities, I can expect this map close to, if not higher than 1500kb. Would you sit and download this map if you haven't heard anything about it, and it seems completely new to you?

Some maps I've seen are over 3megs (Princess prophesy I think) and some are good, some are bad.

Too YOU how big is too big?

3MB downloading over BNet is too big.

Anything over 2MB is not worth getting off of BNet.

Anything under 2MB but over 1MB can be hosted, be in a download only game.

Under 1MB, let people download.

Besides that...just use a webpage and let people decide how long they wanna wait

For me, nothing that war3 allows, as I have a great connection. For 56kers, 300 kb is huge, and anything over 400 will be impossible for them.

This would make a great poll....

Personally, I have set 500K as my max BNET size. Anything bigger is going to make people give up before it's finished downloading.

I suppose if it it was a 2-6 player game only, however, that you could reasonably expect people to DL up to 1MB.

I'd d/l any map that was hosted, the war3 limit is small enough to allow that. But most people seem to be very impatiant, I dont think many people would play a map above 1.5megs unless they know it will be good

so 1.5 would be as large as I'd make one but i'd d/l any size

I have maps as big as 550k, but they are unhostable on B.net... when I make a new version, I have to email or IM it to a friend with cable/dsl and have him host.

For a 56ker like me, anything bigger than 200k is REALLY pushing it. I pretty much have to get and send big maps over AIM; if I'm not booted by the host, I'll get dropped by b.net.

It took me two weeks to get Defense of the Ancients 2.2 even though I attempted to join DoTA2.2 games twice a day every day.

Pretty much anything with AbilityData.slk edits is already over the limit of a 56ker's downloadability.

Not neccesarily Boddo, you could delete all the rows in abilitydata.slk and just keep the ones you want to use (like I'm doing) and it will save lots of space (up to 50k compressed), that is to 56k'ers.

Since I have my own fast dot com I am going to host all the maps I create for this series I'm working on (MMORPG) and it can all be downloaded at once, or individual maps. Zipped.

That way if the host wanting to play the game is a 56k, he can still play if other people download it from others or my site.

I think people shouldn't use 56k, I know for some it's all they can afford, but for games like warcraft 3 when data transfer can be hectic at times, it just slows EVERYONE down. (Not meanign to be insulting to 56k'ers) But it's true.

Ever thought that reliable broadband isn't equally available everywhere in the world?

I'm just too cheap to get broadband, but there are plenty of people in various parts of the USA and other countries where there simply isn't reasonably affordable broadband.

Anyways, 56k pride 4ever! 56k will always be enough for everyone.
