The map development history of FyreDaug

Lately there have been lots of new people getting into things like spell editing, modding and making good campaigns.

I remember when I firwst bought warcraft 3 I couldn't do a damn thing with the editor, I was too used to the Starcraft Campaign Editor that when this hit me I didn't know what to do. I would play the regular ladder games online, and lose most of them (Here's my profile). I haven't played for months and I don't plan to. Mostly because of all the things that can be done with WE.

When I first wanted to start getting into mapping in warcraft 3, I went to warcraftiii.net, because when I was in the diablo 2 area, diabloii.net was really good. The people at that forum were pretty stuck up and when I would ask a question like: "With the unit editor, how can I change the sounds of units?" UMSWE wasn't out (or I didn't know about it at the time) so I didn't know what to do. They didn't help me, so I came here and I have been here ever since. I've been here since October 10th 2002, and I love it here.

In the last 2 months or so, there have been so many new people getting into the WE area, in these 2 months the population of us has easily quadroupled (sp?). I think it is mainly because of all these new high quality maps and people get impressed and want to do something like that on their own. All I can say is Good For Them, Warcraft 3 has fairly low limits and is fairly easy to get used to once you do start to learn it.

For me, it all started back at the end of October, I started my first tower defence map after seeing the "New 10 way tower defence map" and I started to make a map that was going to be original, never been done before. There were 12 players, each having their own little area to guard, then it started turning into more of an individual effort game, and finally it turned out to be a 12 player tower defence map, where you have your own column to defend. As I started tweaking bugs on my own, I went to play online with some people. People were saying it was like Blixel's TD (I didn't know what it was, so I decided to go find a blixels game). I instantly fell for blixels, it was like mine, only balanced, and popular. Since mine was still it beta stages and blixels was near complete. I basically dropped my map, and played blixels alot.
Then my luck continues.... I started on a Warriors and Merchants map (from starcraft), I got all the layout working and some of the triggers. So I decided to take a break and play some custom games again, guess what I find, a game called Buyers and Sellers. Damnit, this one was like mine, only the terrain was better than mine (Since I was still new I didn't really know the editor) so I again dropped my map.
Then I figured I would create a remake of one of my own starcraft maps. 255 upgrades fast and free. I did it, no one else had it and it was mine! My own map I had that people played, I was pretty excited and I thought I could do something better. Then I took my little break and saw a map called "Big Game Hunters" thinking it was like the SC/BW version I went to play it. It wasn't BGH. So I loaded up my Staredit, opened UMSWE 3.4 (Which was the newest at the time) and created an exact replica of BGH to the best I could. It was good and people played it.
I went around plaing some custom games and I saw this Aeon of Strife, I didn't think anything of it at the time and played some more TD's. When that got boring I played this Aeon of Strife. I instantly got hooked and started created my own called Double Gates. I screwed up on the terrain and the triggers so much I just decided to drop it and start again. I started learning some spell editing and I started to master WE. Then I created my Dark Crescent map (Which is basically like AOS, with custom heroes/spells) I got bored and couldn't motivate myself to finish the map so it sits here incomplete, while hundreds of other maps create AoS style maps.
I started creating a few RPG maps that never made it through. Then I started learning more about WE and spell editing.

Now here I am, creating a complete MOD of warcraft 3 with completely new stuff. I feel proud of myself to have made it this far, and it's good if I can help other people step up to the stage I have broughten myself up to.

So if any of you need some help with problems you are having, or need help understaning something, I will do my best to help you.

Electro, what the hell are you talking about? I'm bored, so I'm letting people get to know me. How did you get the vibe that I'm abusing powers? It's a free forum, I'm just posting a topic....

The thing is, that well, we dont need to know this. Please, best to be put in General Discussion. Ill even make a Stickied thread for stuff like this in there. It just doesnt belong here, and you never seemed to do this stuff when you werent a mod. Thats what i mean by power abuse.

...I don't see this as power abuse. I don't hang around the General Discussion part of the forum, and people from there don't all hang around here. So some don't even know I exist. And I've been a mod for a while now, I post 1 message abotu myself and you acuse me of abuse?

Actually, the BGH one and 255 upgrades has been completed. And I'm keeping myself motivated with the Dark Crescent Mod. Which is hard, since I only get about 30 mins a day for this.

Most of my incomplete maps can never be revived, mostly because of the way I was designing them compared to now. Back then all my triggers were basic GUI ones. And now most of mine are advanced JASS, and I don't feel like redoing triggers.

It takes manliness to admit that you worked on such crappy, noob infested maps. Trying to a create a Tower Defense, Knights and Kings map, 255 upgrade map, and BGH is something that should normally be punishable by death. It's good to see that you moved on past maps like those and are making unique interesting stuff now.

I also don't see how this is in anyway at all hurting the map development forum.

Alexian, actually I'm very proud of my BGH map, it looks very close to the original SC/BW one. I attached it incase you wanted to take a look for yourself. I don't protect my melee maps.

RENAME TO ( 8 )Big Game Hunters '02.w3m (no spaces between ( 8 ) for some reason it keeps it called "attachment"

Hey thats pretty cool Fyre, I was starting to think these boards were kind of snobby and elitist(sp?), but reading this has made me think it about it some more. Nice of you to offer help too. I also remember those newb days cause Im living them right now :D

I should get a dumbest questions or biggest noob award...

And since Im all teary eyed here is my first map ever made in w3.

Its an Aeon type MP map for 6-10 players (3v3,4v4,5v5)

11 Hero's with Morphs (using exsisting models and spells/abilities in WE)
Elements of TD. You can buy tower builders and make TD type towers.

I think it's decent for my first attempt, it was a bit ambitious I suppose, but when I get an idea in my head...It's completely playable and works though. Check it out. I just cant seem to get into single player games anymore so Im focusing on MP maps for Bnet. I consider it done for now pretty much.

My current project is a Map called RingWorld loosely based off the book by Larry Niven. It's a defense type map, with 6 "rings"(levels) with 2 rounds and a Boss round for each "ring" and a final boss for Ring 6. Basically you survive the rounds, kill boss, get transported to next ring etc..

Anyway, sorry to ramble on in your thread but nice post
:D
