Naval Units... Gotta be a better way

On a map i am making i need there to be naval units ships, seamonsters etc... That can only move on water. And i also need real air units to be able to fly over water areas unresticed by boundries. So far the only method of doing this i have found is to place invisble air units all around the water areas, blocking movent of my "Naval" units onto ground. And then just to place a trigger in the map that disables collosions for all "Real" air units dragons, gryocopters, grypons etc... this method works, allowing for naval units only to move on water, and unrestriced movement of air units. But i has a couple of problems that are kinda pissing me off. A. Air units "Stack" like they did back in SC and that just looks kinda weird. (althought there will rarely be enough air units on my map for this to be an issue). B. Placing all those units arond the water areas is a pain, and im sure it will cause lag. So does anyone know of a better method(s). That will work better than the one i have described above? If so thanks in advanced. If not oh well i guess ill just have to put up with these issues.

and i already considered putting regions around the coast that just make ships turn back when near them. But that is an even bigger pain in the butt than placing the units. So i can't really use that method either

I think the regions might be the best way...

Or maybe make the Naval units ground-walkers, and use a lot of Shallows... I don't know, just a suggestion.

air units doesnt stack when collisions arent 0

boats just don't look right in shallow water. i guess i should stop whining this method does work after all. oh well i i suppose when are trying to do something that was not orginally meant for the game to have you gotta make do with what you got...

I haven't had a chance to try this yet, but it might be possible to have doodads follow invisible or otherwise unseeable units, as the doodad should have proper ship behavior, and the invis. unit can be restricted by boundaries. If you get the chance to try this, please email me back with the results

If you dont mind editing the pathing map do this:
Make all ships have a movement type of 'flying', and set the pathing map so that all land is 'unflyable'. Then change all flying units to have movement type 'none' but leave the movement speed the same and they will be able to fly everywhere and will still collide properly with eachother and they will appear to fly because of their movement height.

Well try this (I'm gonna try it when I get home because I'm curious if it'll work)

Use deep water instead of shallow. Set movement type to hover (or float - it's whatever the lich uses) and then alter the unit field that controls how high above the ground they move.

I'm not saying it will work...but it would be worth trying and it would only take about 2 minutes to put together and test.

make unit fly, make the flying hight low enuf so its partially in water, then use triggers so taht no naval units can leave the water area

He's already stated that making as many regions as it would take to keep in them in the water would be too much of a hassle.

Unless you can suggest another tigger event to use aside from Unit Enters Region or Unit Leaves Region he's already thought about and discarded that idea.

I would wonder if , there could be a patch specificly aimed toward naval units being specificly naval? and not being able to travel on land :D

Here's my attempt. I didn't do anything with flying units, but the ships seem to work pretty good.

I accomplished the effect through use of Zepir's map editor by painting all of the land as impassable to air.

Care.
