Why would anyone ever make an RPG in W3?

Ok hear me out. I know I'm new here but I've been around the scenario design community longer than half (I mean half, no more, no less) the people here (former member of CampaignCreations, first site like this if any of you played StarCraft). I'm not trying to brag, just understand I know what I'm talking about atleast a little bit.

Here's my point of view on the issue of making RPGs in War3.

I see SO many posts and announcements of mapmakers "RPG" projects. WarCraft 3 is a... "Role Playing Strategy" game. A cross between RolePlayingGame and RealTimeStrategy. Making an RPG scenario only LIMITS what WarCraft III is made of, and all about.

A truely quality campaign is one similiar to the looks of the Rise of Krill for WC3, or old SC campaigns like the Antioch Chronicles, if anyone has played that. Something epic that utilizes all of a game's aspects, not narrowing it down to an "RPG". If you want to play a Blizzard RPG, play Diablo, not War3. That's MY opinion.

Does anyone agree with me? Don't flame, it makes you look more immature than myself. If you disagree, use meaningful points to prove me wrong, not petty insults.

Well I disagree with this. It limits the strategy elements that War3 is all about but in enhances the RPG elements that War3 is all about.

Warcraft 3 is a hybrid genre. It has elements of both (in this case stronger in strategy) So while RPG's may seriously hinder the strategy portion of the game it definately expands on all of the RPG features. (assuming it's a good map and doesn't _just_ use the built in RPG features).

True, you've got a point. If they make it good, I understand. For example, those Diablo scenarios are cool. It's just I see so many trash RPGs which are nothing but walk down a winding road, fight a boss, walk some more, etc... a lot are repetive. Quality ones, however, like you said, I suppose can enhance one of W3's greatest aspects.

One last thing, the fact that a character can only level up 10 times sort of limits the variety of character expansion. I guess item-drops help, but with only 10 changes, (like I see a lot of times), that gets sort of old. I guess it'd be cool if they managed to import more evolutions to your character.

since you don't have multiplayer campaigns, rpg maps makes a great substitute for them. and anyway, RPG maps are really fun to play, and like myself, lots of ppl like playing RPG maps multiplayer, and that's why i'm making my own map :)

You are right on some aspects, however there are other things to consider. One is their editor. If the editor has all the trigger functions and variety to make a high quality rpg, then it should be done. It's also asking, why do people make defense or madness maps? It all depends on the creator of the map. I agree, some of the rpgs on the net that are made are thrown together and are sloppy. Regardless of these, RPGs have great potential but people need to use their mind and put the effort into making the RPGs something to remember. RPGs actually be better than the campaign and the RTS portion of WCIII but thats only if the creator is good enough to make it that well. It's all in the style of the player and map maker.

You've got a point, Raven and TWchaos. I guess we all have our own opinions. I, however, like to merge the two, RTS and RPG. I guess that's just because I get bored of RPG after a while, and I also get bored of RTS after a while, as well. Therefore, I hope that people see variety in my campaigns.

There are no multiplayer campaigns? Why not? I think it would be very innovative if somebody made a multiplayer CAMPAIGN. A campaign similiar to those of Blizzard. RPG missions (Orc Dungeon Mission, Night Elf Underground, etc), and even some RTS build-and-destroy missions.

It's just, you look in the Retail forum and all you see is "new RPG". You never see "new campaign," sort of lacks variety, no?

True true, but campaigns are longer to make and its harder to make it for multiplay since you cant really link maps together on multiplay. The only campaigns really are single player ones where the character can carry on throughout the maps. There are people who are making campaigns such as the creators here in WC3Campaigns and I am working on one alone. However, I have shared the same opinion with you on that some of the RPGs are too basic so I'm trying to make mine complex and full of new things, thus it's taking awhile to complete.

Well, using custom MPQs we can get rid of the her lvl 10 limit and also edit the spells, creating new ones. That would make a RPG map look more RPG-stylish. We could also create/edit abilities, sounds, upgrades........ lot of stuff. The problem (it comes since starcraft) is that ppl would need that custom MPQ to play, and this can make things harder, unless it is a very famous map/mod with lots of pll playing it. Its is easier to spread a MAP than a MOD coz Bnet helps the maps to spread but this do not happen with mods.

If someone is playing ladder for an example and then wants to play some rpg, with simple clicks he would be playing it. To play a MOD he would need to quit the game, launch the mod and try to find rpg games for it. Painfull. That's why we got excited when we discovered that SOME Slks can be imported on maps, coz this helps to create better maps without needing to create a special mod to play it.

I guess the perfect sollution would be Blizz allow us to add ALL slks and txts to the maps. Who knows, there are rummors they're working on it.

Yeah I've heard those rumors.

MPQediting can lead to beyond LV.10. Really? I never knew that. That sounds cool, actually. RPGs like that I can respect.
