My First Skin!

After much suffering and soul searching, I have completed my first skin.

Things to note: I have never played with any of these programs until this morning. I don't know the first thing about art, let alone digital... It took me all day to figure it out, and I'm pretty impressed with what I've managed to do. It's also a very simple skin, nothing big or fancy.

Basically, tell me what you think. Give me constructive criticism. I'm not really looking for 'It sucks' or 'It's great!' unless you tell me what sucks/rocks in particular.

I've attached a jpg. If anyone wants the *.blp or whatever, let me know, I'd be glad to hand it over.

Hmm... interesting. What inspired you to do this? Suddenly I find it odd that I've never seen anyone skin a horse into just... a horse. It's nice, kind of splotchy though I'm not sure if it's meant to be so multi colored. It could definitely do with some modeling though, unless horses really look that fat. Just wondering- aren't horse hooves black except for the horse shoe, instead of all metal covered looking? What are your plans for this skin, a campaign or just to see if you can skin well?

I too thought it was odd that noone had skinned a regular ol' horse. My guess is that the project just wasn't as interesting as skinning a Demon Hunter ;)

I guess a couple things inspired me to do this, the first and foremost being that I wanted to learn how to skin. The second was that I'm making a map with a big open plain in the middle, and I thought it would be cool to have 'wild' horses roaming about.

As for the splotchy look, I was attempting to make it multi-colored in that way. Do you think it would look better with a more flat colored coat? I think it could do for some modeling too (my next project), but for now it can be a Clydesdale :-D

As for the hooves, that was the color that comes standard with the horse skin, and I didn't change it. Horses can have different colored hooves other than just black. But, I went ahead and changed them to black. Which do you think is better?

Yeah, I like this better. It seriously needs the modeling though, it looks like a brown cow with a horse head when it's that pleasantly plumb. I think I would like it better if it was less splotchy, unless of course real horses are actually variously toned like that.

alright, the fat little horse was starting to bug me too, so I sat down and learned how to model the horse model... No easy task for me, mind you.

I haven't tweaked it too much, just a little. What do you guys think? Should I tweak it some more?

I haven't messed with the skin yet, but I'll see about putting a couple different ones up and see what everyone likes the best.

The front of the horse still looks a little fat. But it is very cool though! :D
Maybe you should edit the model a bit more, and make a few different variations (i.e. one with the same color hair everywhere, spotted, black/white hair)

EDIT: Also, try making the tail longer.

Thanks for the comments guys!

I haven't done anything with the skin yet, but I have managed to fiddle some more with the model. I think it looks alot better, but of course I've been staring at the damn thing for way too long. Please, tell me what you think and give me some feedback as to how I can make this better!

Also, I plan to start working on some different variations (ie, color markings) shortly, so I'll have more to post hopefully soon.
