Problem with Spells (plz read at least)

I always have some kind of trouble when editing the SLKs. When I edit it in the Excel and add a speel, it shows everything fine, except for the fact that... the spell doesn't work! I shows it in the editor AND in game, but it simply doesn't work. When I try using a spell editor, and add a spell, it simply crashes the game when I implant it in war3patch.mpq (I always do this in order to do maps more easily; only then I implant the files in the map)! Can someone help me? I have Windows XP and Office 2002

first off i just want to let you know that i think putting files into your patch mpq is generally a bad idea.

and second, could you site an example of a spell that doesn't work-- if you can see the spell in the editor and in game it most likely isnt a problem with inserting the files, it's probably in the spell coding.

Well, putting files into the War3Patch.mpq is generally no bad idea as long as you make a backup of War3Patch.mpq. The advantage is that you don't have to create a map for testing.
Anyway, I know an even better way of quickly testing spells (or other changes that require normally file implementing via a MPQ editor):
Enable "Allow Local Files". If you don't know what it is, I'd suggest to go to my website and download War3Config, a little tool for quick and simple configuration of Warcraft III. There you can enable it with one click.
Otherwise you have to run the Registry Editor (RegEdit). Then you have to fo to this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Warcraft III. There you have to create a new DWORD value, name it "Allow Local Files" and set 0 to disable it and 1 to enable it.
Then you create a folder "Units" into your Warcraft III directory. If this folder already exists and contains files, you should remove the files inside, because problems. Then you move the edited SLK and TXT files into that "Units" folder.
Now you can run Warcraft III and test the changes. After testing it is recommended to switch this off, by setting "Allow Local Files" to 0. Alternatively you can use War3Config to achive this (this is easier).

that's pretty neat-- i wonder if there is way to do this on a mac.

I don't know anything about MAC. So I ask you: Is there something similiar to the Windows registry? Or some other sort of where programs can store their configuration to easily retrieve it?

actualy, it seems like the problem with my SLKs are the "data" strings, since it accepts the display in editor column. Like, I modified endurance aura, the it showed 0 movement lvl 1, 0 movement lvl 2, 0 movement lvl 3, and when I learn the spell, it's like I wassted a skill point, since it shows it in the skills not learned as if it was lvl 0, and it takes no effect! (I think this is a bit confusing... can you understand it?)

It appears that you have done something wrong. I have had the same problem, but somehow I was able to come round it. It would be helpful if you post your files so that I can check them.

Ok, but would rather e-mail it to you. What's your email adress? Do you want the TXTs (which seems to be working fine) along with the SLK?

Send me all files you edited.

Hmmm... Ok, I trust you, I'll send you the files ASAP, but plz, don't go stealing my job, ok? Not that I did much, the graphic part I was going to do after the program test. Didn't mean to be rude, but you're never too careful these days :D

EDIT: I just sent you the email

So, SCFreak, what's the problem with those files?

Hey sorry, I was quite busy the last time and I haven't checked my emails. The most post here were done at school. Don't worry, I'll neither steal your work nor ignore your request for help. I just downloaded them.

The first thing I can tell you that you can forget the bufftips. They don't cause a crash, but they simply have no effect.

I don't know why this doesn't work on your computer. For me it works fine.
BTW, LOL you have fear that I steal your work? I would only have fear that someone steals my work if it is something difficult to do. Instead of stealing your work I'd copy the Spell Endurance Aura, edit the alias and uberalias and then create an entry in the <race>abilityfunc/strings.txt files.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend you, I'm really sorry.:( I said that because I thought I was going to finish the graphic part of the spell before sending you the files, then I just thought that wasn't needed. Not that I have done much too, just edited the spell's MDL and BLP color. Anyways, do you think it is well balanced?

Depends on how you want to use it. I mean it only increases movement speed. This ability is very good if you want to perform hit&run tactics.

About the graphics: When I was testing it, I changed the Targetart to Abilities\Spells\Orc\Berserker\BerserkerTarget.mdl (I think that's the art of an ability that has never been used in the game). Then it looks quite cool.

I didn't feel offended, but quite amused as I saw that you fear that someone steals something that is quite simple to do.

BTW, does it work for you now (the intention of this thread was that you weren't able to use it.
