2 questions from a newbie

Right, first of all I have practically no experience with skinning (I know how to import/export them and the basics of grapics porgrams), nor do I want to go very deep at first, just to make a few recolors, but there are two things I's like to ask:

1. Can you suggest some good image editing program to use that doesn't expire in 30 days and doesn't cost 600$? One that handles alpha channels in a straigtforward way, preferably.

2. How do you produce human skin tones? I've been trying a bit and not getting anywhere. The best I could do was a sickly yellow.

1 - www.gimp.org
2 - See the attachment. (Realistic looking though) If you want a cartoony like colooring just use blizzard's skins ones.
