Modelling video

yes, me, walking down the runway.

actually its me modelling a low poly dude's head with 3ds max. not really a tutorial, but i ddnt know where else to post this. watch it because its so ****ing cool and stuff. maybe not. anyway, i like watching these things so i made one. i dont use any hotkeys (which makes my a shitty modeller) except shift-click-and-drag to extrude an edge. other then that you can see me click on overy tool that i use. most people dont model this way, and they would probably say that its wrong/dumb or something. oh well. watch this. it be 11 megs.

here it is, i suggest you watch it in windows media player with fast forward. its 15 minutes long so you dont really wanna watch it in real time. dont use realplayer it makes it looks REALLY bad.
DOWNLOAD ME

and you will need this codec
TECHSMITH CODEC

a few things about the model. i used no reference, its just a generic mad dude. its about 160 polys, and could be lower. pretty suitable for warcraft3.

Heya kdub, just curious, but what program did you use to create the video?
I haven't actually seen yours yet, but i have a program which records all movement on the screen, I'm guessing yours does as well, but was just wondering in case it may be possible to get the file size a little lower.

camtasia with the techsmith codec. i dont think screen capture gets any better than this. every one of these things i have downloaded by other people have used the same thing.

hey kdub, does that camera have sound support too. because if u were able to Talk about what u were doing as u were doing it, it would be a great low poly tutorial. It would be like the VTMs over at 3dbuzz.

btw how many faces or polys is that?

ya you can talk with that screen capture program. i didnt though. this wasnt really meant to teach people anything. i was just jacking around. i might make a more serious one later to explain some more warcraft specific stuff.

cool, maybe ull start a new trend of visual tutorials, anyway, could u really fast tell me what button combonation u used to pull rectangles out of existing ones. I saw that u basically took a rectangle, instanced a clone out of it, and then cut off all but the top face. I have a question about this, why did u just not create a fac in the first place (im kinda of a n00b so im trying to learn froma master), i tried doing that, and i got a ton of points that were not just around the rectangle, but gridding across it too. This may be why u just choose to start with a prism. Anyways, i tried intancing another rectange, cutting of the bottom to get a face. But then when i shift drag (doesnt shift-dragging usually clone?) it didnt do what yours did. It just created invisible objects (i guess it cloned it). So could u please tell me if im missing something or doing something wrong plz?

thx a lot

(this should probably be in a PM so ill send u one too just in case u dont look at this post)

i just used a cube instead of a face to start with because i could get the one face that i wanted to be lined up perfectly against the axis. i could not have done this with a plane object. to extrude the edges all you do is hold shift and use the move tool. your cube has lots of extra stuff on it because you need to adjust the settings of the cube in the modify tab. set it to be only one section instead of 4 or 5 which is default. dont take how you saw me model this too seriously, i would normally spend much more time and the technique is probably not the best.

but it seems really easy when u do it, so i want to learn how to do it like that. Ill try doing what u said. Also, how do u get the view to where it shows the actual rectangles, When i pull out rectangles, it shows no individual rectangular pieces, just a giant connected mass

right click on the viewport where it says perspective and go down to show edges faces.

Thx, i have one more question though, How can i get it to where i can see the faces all the time. Because sometimes ill make a face but i cant see it until i turn the object around, its invisible on one side. How can i make it to where i can see it no matter where im lookin? thx
