new rpg beta

Hey guys. Here is my new (well, about a year old, but I havent gotten around to doing anything with it untill now) RPG. I just read a post about rpgs being all the same and rather boring. Well, if your looking for something different, give this a try. The skeleton structure is very similar to many rpgs (buncha heros, gotta kill some peeps, get experience and stuff, etc.) but thats where it ends. This map uses some very intracate triggers to implement a new style of rpg. Its not just a map full of baddys that you have to kill all of so you can fight the boss and win. The game has a steep experience and difficulty curve, and may take time to beat, but its very different from most of what is out there. I would appreciate comments on it, and if you all could let me know if there are any major bugs (I finished this map in WE 1.02) and have updated it for 1.04. Anyway, you can click on it, and I'm done raving now!

*EDIT*
Oh crap... sorry guys, its too big, lemme upload it somewhere else real quick, and ill link to it in just a sec,
*EDIT #2*
Well, I seem to have another problem... Does anyone know any good place to store something about 5.5 MB in size that others could acces easly? If you have a website and have enough space, I would really appreciate it if you would lemme upload it for just a while. Thanks
*EDIT #3*
Ok, maps up, just scroll down for the latest version!

Well ok, here it is, I removed all the music, so it takes a little away from gameplay, but atleast its playable. I hope you enjoy it, and if you could post your comments here after playing it, that would be appreciated greatly.

*EDIT* sorry to bump this post, but the upload new attachment wasn't replacing the old one, so I made a new post. If you want a challange in single player (ie you probably wont win) DL this one, otherwise, to experience the entire story, check out the one in my next post.

*EDIT* A new version is up, check the last post!

Well, with 6 downloads and 4 complaints about the difficulty, I have decided to reduce the single player difficulty by a rather large amount. I couldn't edit the attchment, so here is the "easy" version!

Also, please rate this map on my poll.

btw, check out my other map at club a seal
thanks!

hmm... mediev keeps popping up and "talking" but it doesnt say anything. emote_confused

how do you get into "darkness"? i got confuzzled and ended up being killed by a level "8 undead" that does 55 chaos damage... :(

the reason you can't hear what mediev is saying is because you don't have subtitles on.
The "darkness" is exactly where duul'aton says it is, straight (and I mean Straight) west from the city, not south west, or north west, just go straight west (thats left btw).

btw, where were you when that undead smacked you? That might have been a bug with my spawner triggers.

Oh yeah, and just a note to everyone who DLs this... When you die, dont leave, cuz there are triggers to bring you back to life (with penalties ofcoarse).

Dont let anyone get you down

I made an original RPG with a steep difficulty curve. I've never met anyone to this day who could beat it but me. Ive gone through it with 7 people(its an 8 person RPG) and 5 of em died, then the sixth left. But I've also beaten my map with only one person. Some RPG's require tactics, skill, and teamwirk, not just having a better hero than the enemy does. RPG's like mine and yours are truly supurior regardless of their popularity. I cant host mine though, lol. I'm an internet n00bie.:ggani:

Here's the good and bad:

- Terrain is rather unspectacular, give it some height variation and atmosphere. Natural flats in a WC3 map don't work - visuals are very key.
- The dungeons were very linear and cramped.
- The library text doesn't seem to stop. I typed in the keywords and it continued on for AGES. I can tell it was heavily influenced by EQ lore, and in that tradition you may want to include brackets every couple paragraphs so we are not forced to be spammed for the next half hour. Make your story more natural for those that don't want to sit and read game text the length of a book.
- No warnings that training the same thing twice will result in no true upgrade.
- Enemies in some areas (such as gnoll camp near first village) respawn almost immediately.
- You mentioned that your map is 5.5 MB: that will not be supported on any format other than single-player; you should compress you music and custom sounds.
- Severe lack of custom items.

+ Although I didn't get to finish the map, the story and background is well thought out.
+ Not too much downtime thanks to several healing potions dropping off enemies.
+ Good town layouts.

Overall Rating: 7/10

I believe your map has a good core, but there is definetly room for improvement. I love custom music, so I can understand your frustration in not being able to post the uncut version here. This is not the best place for feedback because most posters here are concerned with their own projects and not others.

Trav, Thanks so much for the feed back. The dungenons are supposed to be cramped, because I wanted variety. As you will find, there are some VERY open dundeons and some mildly open ones as well. The first 2 were added later so ppl who wouldn't go indepth in the game could still fight in a dungeon, and therefore were limited in space. As for the custom items... I know it may be annoying, but you gotta look a little harder... there are about 80 custom items in the game, but you just gotta work for em. As for the library, thats a great idea for continuing the texts, as even when I tested it, i found it annoying how long the texts were. The gnoll respawn is a bug I noticed after I uploaded, and I will upload a fix for that and a few other bugs soon. The EQ storyline is due to the fact that this map was created just as I was leaving EQ, so I was kinda lazy to find new names. The actual story line does not really pertain to anything from EQ, but a few places and names were taken from it (well, ok, a couple significan places are named for EQ things). The map is not 5.5 mb anymore, its about 65kb with no custom music at all.
And the problem with the terrain seeming flat was that I designed the story first, which I thing all RPGs should do, they should focus on the story first, and everything should be built around that. Well, for the story, there were four major places, the two citys, the castles, and a cave you will find later on. The other things I included before I set out on major terrain work was the dungeons, and the the high/low points you may or may not find, so I don't wanna spoil it.
The terrain came last, and by then, I was limited to hills, and now cliffs to keep the map path clear enough. With so many trees, its hard to see the rises and falls, but if you look closely, the only "flat" parts of the maps, are the citys, and a few caves (on because the floor is tiled, and the other for a reason you will figure out when you get there). As for other aspects of terrain, there are tons of them, mushroms, leaves, rocks, logs, everywhere, just perhaps not noticable when you are worring about fighting off ten baddys at the time. After you are done, take a sec to look around, zoom the camera in a bit maybe, and try looking left and right. You will notice the map has a rather large number of doodads, just maybe not all of them are visible in plain sight.
But, since that was your first comment, I will make a concerted effort to make the atmosphere more "visible." Its never the users fault that something in the map seems wrong.

Thanks again so much for you feedback, and I will attempt to fix as many of the mentioned downsides as possible. Thats why this is a beta (although the file says its a final) so I can perfect it for release as a final.

Well i didnt get that far through it but it looks like you put a lot of time into it (considering how large it is). I didnt get far enough to really give a rating, so far i'd give it a 7.3/10.0. It would have been much better with some better music. And also I woulda liked it if it had more creeps (like i said, i didn't get far)

Good job though, it's pretty good

That brings up a good point, thank you Elite(Death, yeah, this map has a lot to offer, but its not always apperent at the beginning. Like he said, he didn't get far, and there are many creeps farther in the game. As for the music, that was discussed above... the music made the file too large to upload anywhere, so I had to use blizzard music in this version.
Btw, thanks for your input E(D, any response is a great help!

Well, heres the latest version of the ez version. It has a couple fixes to some complaints made previously, as well as some extra "bonus" quests and a few extra cinematics. Enjoy!

uh by the way, I think a good website for uploading files would probably be www.freewebs.com (I think it's 100MB free space, and no pop-ups or banners if you want an actual site :))
