Voice Study: Troll

Okay, so I've been listening to some voices from Warcraft III, as I have plans for a campaign - but that's not important. WarIII has a LOT of VERY GOOD voices, and I wish I could do all of them. I have a professional recording microphone, but I somehow can't seem to get rid of the background shit without "edging off" the sound too much. See if I do too much noise reduction, the voices sound kinda like robots, and if I do too little noise reduction, well, you hear the noise.

BUT that didn't stop me from trying to do a Troll voice and some Grunt takes. Those are the funniest Orc voices in Warcraft III. I have a lot of experience voicing Protoss for Starcraft, but I've never actually seriously tried something for Warcraft. The Grunt particulary hurt my throat. :D

Here goes nothing.

The Orc one sounded VERY much like the original but the troll....well...it sounded a bit forced, no real feeling in it.

Thanks for the feedback guys, yeah, I know the Troll sounded bad, but hey, it was my first try. Well, second, I tried it sometime last week.

Currently trying to do a good Tauren Chieftain. NOT easy.

Troll - Too fastly said and 'light' (Pitch it, Mac). Well-meant expression though.

Orc- As great as ever. That'll come in really handy someday. :)
Be careful with the loud 'P' (I think that's why people use them shield guard thingies, I forget the names).

I find Tauren Chieftain's quite easy... well, personally I think. Tell me what you think with the below. One take recording with 110 pitch.

Why can i not hear any of your files?

I have downloaded a few of them, and the files seem to be the right size and all, but there is no duration or sound...

I did another Grunt and a Tauren Chieftain this morning. Both unpitched, and only the Grunt sample was process for noise reduction.

This is the best I can do as yet. I know the chieftain needs pitching.

EDIT:

Are the files corrupted?? I dunno, they work fine for me when I download them off here.

i think the new grunt sounds even better, the Tauren needs a little work, but still good

So, I tried to do a Lich. I already did one about 2 weeks ago, and Magic said it was a little too raspy, so I began working on better effects. No pitching was done, though, but I think it sounds quite good as it is. =)

Grunt: Great, but you need to do longer samples. I'm sure you can emulate exact sayings, but you need to do longer sentences.

Tauren: The mic's too close to your mouth here. Not enough expression in the first parts, but 'For the tribes!' sounds great.
What I found was the way you have your mouth open affects it, it helped me do my sample (What did you think of it BTW?). I can do it speaking normally, but it doesn't sound as good where if I extend my bottom lip slightly over my top one, it sounds more like a chieftain. At least for me. :)

Edit:
Lich: Quite great... but did you use the mechanize effect in GW? It adds a very slight robotic effect which spoils it a little.

Your chieftain sound very much like an old and tired chieftain like Cairne, and that's also what I'm shooting for.

For the Lich I used a SoundForge effect that actually took quite long to make. =) I had the Blizzard Lich next to it, and it's closest I can get to it for now. The SF effect works the same as the GW mechanizer, only the mechanizer adds a robo effect. This effect merely cuts pieces out of the sound, the robotic sound you mean would be the slight robotic echo I added, Blizzard's Lich has that too.

Your tips on speaking in the mic might be useful, btw! :D But I've always had this same problem, I can't go very deep with my voice. I can do a deep voice but that sounds corny and it's not the way it's supposed to be. :D
