Discussion of map ripping

Do you approve of the people who rip maps and modify them? Some of them are alright, I mean if you fix a bug it isn't a big deal, yes it is wrong and I hate people who do it, but everyone does it anyways. The thing I hate the most is when people take a map like AoS and try to take it's popularity into their own map by adding something new. Yes it's innovative, but it isn't original. Think of something new!

Or when "Wc3uber1337ripper" takes a map that is perfectly fine the way it is and they make 1 thing super advantageous that only he knows about and he wins everytime, then puts his name on it and calls it his own. I hate anything rigged like this.

Anyone who even asks for a map unprotector should be shot, burned to ashes, pissed on, and fed to an ugly buffalo. The map is protected for a reason, yes there are ways to get some of the files out of there, but why? It isn't your work, anything I make I should copyright, just so I can sue the shit out of anyone who uses it. It is protected for a reason, you know what that reason is? So people like you who are asking for an unprotector DON'T get to see the map core.

God I can't stress this enough, if it isn't yours, stay away from it damnit. Don't open up someone else's Hero Arena, go make your own godamned hero arena!

I am so glad that the 1.10 patch fucked up all the maps, yeah of course it takes time to fix them all up, but look at how many 5minute rips will be completely removed? If the map is good enough, the author will recreate the core to work with the new patch/TFT. The stupid little wannabe's won't bother redoing theirs.

What do you think?

People just need to protect their maps using W3M Map utilities. Any other map is editable in some way. If you dont protect it, Id say you're asking for it. Yeah people editing good maps are annoying, but its the creator of the map that made it editable in the first place.

haha as much as i agree with you and wish i could personally punch everyone who rips maps and adds "their own little secrets" and puts their name all over someone else's work, it still seems like the maps should be open to the public to improve upon, and if the map is modified by some loser that puts their name on it and ruins the map, then it's as simple as not playing it. but for the people that actually want to improve maps, like fixing a bug, or balancing something (someone please rip angel arena x and remove mirror image and divine shield...) i think the maps should be open for the public to work with. this way people can look at examples of triggers and improve upon it themselves (but if they just rip it and mess with it they better give all the credit to the original author, not put their name on it 5 times just because they fixed a bug) if you think a certain map is just a cheap rip, just don't join/create that version of the game on b.net.
8)

but anyone that just rips something, screws it up, and puts their name all over it should be locked in a room full of rabid squirrels...

but i have done my share of the crime too... if anyone played the Gladiators map in Starcraft and noticed it was strangely similar to the Casino Gambling map... i just opened up the casino map (it involved players putting bets on other players that fought eachother.. whoever had the most money in the end won) and modified it all to be like a roman gladiators game (i couldn't help myself after just watching the movie gladiator.. but i felt kinda bad for the original author cuz the gladiators map became much more popular than the casino map) ...course i still gave credit to the original makers.... i just added "and (my name... cant remember what it was)" after it said who made it.:////

oh yeah, and then some guy ripped my ripped map and made his own "Platinum" version... i was pissed off when i saw how it was actually worse than the old one (IMO) ...so i guess i know how the original maker must've felt... i sort of deserved my map to get ripped.

@#$% that was a long post... i just wasted time i couldve used playin tft! crap! 0_o

I totally agree with leppy. It's so annoying with map protection. I think it doesn't help as much as it irritates honorable modders. It's much easier to see it in the editor than getting three rows of vague info on how to do [insert complex triggering].

Just don't join maps you hate. It's very simple.

And about that they just make a few changes and call it your own, I say: Drop that way of thinking and just be happy people notice your map(Even if it's a grand map, It's the same thing). If people make dumb rips, that means there's people who like it. And people who like it is what modders want. Just be happy.

Honorable modders dont edit someone elses map.

he didnt say honorable modders edit their maps, but use them as a resource for information on how to do things. if we could do that, people wouldnt have to waste more time making tutorials.

though it is the maker's decision to choose whether they want people to play around with their creations or not, it's much more effective to make maps open to the community of gamers than be selfish and close out your stuff for only you. original creators should always get credit, but they shouldn't be afraid of change. people will play the best version there is, and if someone makes their own stupid rip with a bunch of unbalanced stuff and spams their name everywhere, most gamers will know which one to play. and copying someone is the highest form of admiration... or some crap like that.. :D

with games that are open to change, we will get maps that are rapidly improving, instead of everyone working on perfecting the same exact thing on their own. two heads are better than one, and it's best for the improvement of the map that everyone be able to improve it with their own touch. if you don't like ub3r_MAP_R1PP3R_133+_R0x0rZ's version, don't play it.

Oh yes, with open maps we get rapidly improving maps. Just look at oceanmaul. It was better than castlemaul, which was in turn better than desertmaul, which was better than wintermaul, which was better than dungeonmaul!

hahaha well everyone has their own tastes. obviously you have good tastes, so your best bet would be to not play maul games. thats a "dumb rip" but when people actually improve them or use triggers from them isntead of making stupid spin-offs, it works.
its also known as sharing. :p

what if someone "locked" the wheel? everyone else would have to reinvent their own, and we probably wouldnt even have cars yet... :bgrun: well maybe we would, but you get the point. :D

... 0_o i'm starting to sound like a communist....

Then the newbs would stick to playing the good versions, where the good people would make their own versions. The way it should be.

What about the "You are free to edit this map, just include me in the credits" maps?

Created by the few good people that still have faith in other people.

My idea is: If someone protects the map he/she probably has a reason to do so. Go talk to the map designer and check if you can get the source (not-locked) version of it.

If the map designer does´t want to give the source to you, then create your own map. Stop stealing someone else credit.

I'm also pleased with 1.10 and FT "corrupt map problems". Let´s clean the garbage and stick with good maps.

"The Newbs" You mean that people that are new can't see what maps are fun and which are boring and unbalanced? When I was a newbie(Well, I still am, when it comes to playing) I played the maps I liked. Which was the quality maps. But sometimes the quality maps gets better spin-offs, for example hero maps where your hero never gets powerful(boring), someone might make a version with cheaper tomes or something(nothing unbalanced) that makes it more fun, IMO.

People will always play the maps they like. Be happy, don't worry. :D

If people can look in the maps, they learn how to trigger complicated things/Things they can't trigger. If they learn to do that, they can use that feature in their map. If they do that, the map will probably be better. Better maps is good. See?
