Audio Compression?

Does anyone know what a best audio compression would be for warcraft maps? In my map, I want to have it so the voice of a starcraft hero says something funny everytime a level starts.. thought that would be cool.. seeing how its "nuke" defense in all =)

Theres around 30 lvls, and 30 mp3's is still like 600k.. thats a bit big for 56ker's eh?

Try my HEAVY LOCKER. It can optmize maps a bit and can also "lock" maps. Note that I can´t promisse outstanding results, but ppl are getting about 20% map size optmization. Also note that if the map has LOTS of WAVES (wavs, mp3 go ok) it might actually end larger than the original map.

Just use less sounds. Nobody's looking forward to the sounds when they play a map anyway. Compressing it will reduce quality, and wont matter a lot on file size.

Well yea.. but on that one tower defense map, where the units said random taunts at you, it was cool as heck. So wouldnt it be super sweet if the starcraft units threw the starcraft taunts at you? =P

Hmm.. is there a way to reduce the sound quality?

you can rcompress sound but it takes a little time... here is how it woeks. download a WAV recorder, then play the music or the sound and recorded with highest quality and save it. so now you have your sound in WAV format at the best quality and the size is really big. now right click on it and chose record. then go to file properties and click on convert... here you can choose the quality and the format you want to convert it to. you can make a full 5 min song into 100k or less using low quality MP3.

Blizzard should have made Warcraft support Speex, a free codec for compressing speech. It would be great for putting taunts and stuff in maps.

It also helps to make the waves 22 khz 16 bit mono, or if quality isn't as important, 11 khz 16 bit mono. 8 bit if you're really desperate :)

Here, this is a low quality converted/Compresed version of a 2 min music. Original WAV=22 MB

This is the format i use for my maps... its a lot more clear and the size is resonable.
