Problems finding mdx files with MPQ view

Hi,

I'm basically a newb at this, but I really love the game and would like to make some custom units, so please excuse any blatently ignorant questions...

I'm trying to follow cookie's tutorial for skinning and I'm having trouble finding the mdx files talked about.

I open up MPQ view and "mount" the listfille by going to [open data file..] -> select W3MlistFile.txt as instructed. I think go to [open archive] and selecte war3.mpq. That's as far as I can follow though. The next step seems to be to "Set [Filter] on: .mdx. Select the mdx you wish to use." However, there is no .mdx option on the filter drop down menu, and more importantly nothing but "listfile" appears in my mpq view window. No file names of any kind, just "listfile" and certainly nothing with a *.mdx name.

I'm sure I'm missing some critical step that should be obvious, and I'm hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

I appreciate any adivce.

Thanks,

Mr.H

1- Extract "(listfile)" from the war3.mpq and save it.
2- Rename it as "war3list.txt" and place it on MPQVIEW path.
3- On MPQVIEW select this "new file" as it's listfile.

Ahh, that's what I needed, too. Why doesn't anybody tell people these things in readme files and tutorials?

As before. Sorry if this is unusually ignorant.

I'm still having problems.

What exactly do you mean by "place it on MPQView path"?

I can open up and save the list file like you said, and I can save it as "war3list.txt", or change the name afterwards. But then when I try to open it up in MPQView as an archive, it says "Selected file did not open. It may not be a valid Archive." Or, if I try to open it as a data file, nothing happens at all. I can open it up in word pad and see all the different lines of info though.

Thanks for the help so far. I'm hoping someone can help me all the way through this.

Open war3list.txt as the Data File, not the archive.

Open war3.mpq as the archive.
