Skinning wid 3Ds max

Ive heard... and actually seen a tutorial somewhere... that you can make skins with 3Ds max. Ive heard its not really a good skinning program, but its the only program ive really got. So if neone know how to skin with it, know a link to a tutorial for it, files i'll need to download to export and import formats onto 3ds max (i have downloaded a few files, but didnt really work at all) or anything that can help me with please E-mail me here or here or reply to this post.

Please send ANYTHING which would help me at all. The program is called 3D Studio Max by Discreet.

I cant really just GET photoshop... not really got nemore money (being 16YO* n not havin a job...).

Please can people who can help reply, even a different program which i can download for free... or an ISO (i have a cd burner... but i dont really want to download big files wid havin a 56k modem).

Im really sure i saw a tutorial on one of these wc3 forums... in fact there was a whole list, but i didnt have the program at the time, and i forgot to bookmark the site.

You can't get Photoshop but you can get Max?

well when i saw you could skin wid 3ds max, i asked someone to buy it 4 my birthday (which was 10th june).

I didnt know you could skin wid photoshop at the time!

Can people please stick to the point here, i mean its a simple enough question... "Do you have any info on skinning wid 3ds max?"

I didnt ask for people to start posting rubbish...

So far ive got one person who has sed "Get photo shop" and another saying "u can buy 3ds max and not photoshop".

I have my reasons... i needed the program for other things, its also the same reason why ive got Coral Draw 10 and Macromedia Studio MX. Im wanting to be a programmer in all sorts of things (website, javascript,Operating Systems,etc...) and creating CG movies and stuff... Now please, can you stick wid the point at hand.

Please post ANY info about skinning on 3Ds max, if you have any. Or you could e-mail me ([email protected] &/or [email protected]).

Corel Draw is fine.

Yeah, i know... i didnt get that all in one day mind. Took a bit of nagging and convicining to get ppl to buy it for me.

Cos i'd rather i heard it on here... thats where i saw it first (tutorials section)... but i tried skinning with those tutorials and the files and/or links were broken or the files not compatible. Thats what i wrote above... i sed "(i have downloaded a few files, but didnt really work at all)"...

That is found on the top (the first post i sent).

Because the 2 files needed VERY BADLY are:

KMK's Max Script MDX Importer/Exporter

and

Yobguls mdx->mdl File Converter

And i couldnt get the KMK's Max Script MDX Importer/Exporter to import or export the wc3 files from the .mpq (i have winmpq and can get the file out just cant get those files imported to 3ds max).

And the other file was a broken link, so either way i im screwed.

Just hope someone knows where to get those files, or other tutorials or anything. PLEASE HELP ME!!! lol.

Please dont think that i think the tutors werent good... they were well diagramed and easy to follow... just would help if the 3ds max plug-in (scripts) would work correctly. AND if that "Yobguls mdx->mdl File Converter" link would be correct.

Skinning in max might be more work than its worth... but it can be done. First you need to know a lot about the material editor and how to make materials. Then you need to learn how to UV map. After you've learned all that, then you can use the burn to texture option found under the render menu (if you're using 3dsmax R5).

But you really need Photoshop to do a lot of the fine tuning and detail... makes things a lot easier.

To clarify:

3D Studio Max is an application used for MODELING 3 dimensional objects. You can apply TEXTURES to those objects in max, and change the texture a little bit (make it give off light, among other things) but it does NOT create textures (skins.)

Skins are made in a 2 dimensional graphic editing program such as Microsoft Paint or Adobe Photoshop.

Once again - 3DS Max does NOT make skins. It models. Some skins do come with 3DS Max though.

Well ok, seen as tho i cant use photoshop... and ms paint isnt really a good program to use to skin (just to clearify... check out some of the skins ppl have made with it).

Heres the programs i have and the specs of my comp:

Specs:
256MB Ram
Windows XP Prof.
2.40 GHz

Programs:
Corel Draw 10
3Ds Max
Macromedia Studio MX
(which has all the macromedia products on it such as, Flash MX, Dreamweaver MX, Extension Manager, FreeHand 10... those are the programs ive chose to install from it)
MS Paint (dont really want to use this tho)
Visual Basic 6.0
MS Photo Editor (dont think you can use this)

And basically the rest are either games or stuff that comes wid windows and office:
Warcraft III: RoC
Diablo II
Starcraft & Broodwars
Office XP
... must i continue? No obviously.

If i can use any of those programs to skin with, please tell me.

Oh and if posible a tutorial to go wid it (or a link to one) and files needed to do it all with.
