Any way to modify unit attack range?

i want this to happen...

When a unit picks up an item it gives him a ranged attack

i tried setting his acquisition range in the editor but it didnt work.

Give the unit a custom range upgrade, and make the item trigger the research of the upgrade.

But what if he/she drops it?

i have idea, but im not sure, try moddiying the Orbs that give heros ranged attacks vs air, maybe part of the spell stats has targets allowed (TFT WE)
