i think you should keep trying until you make good terrain.. i suck at making terrain.. i tried last night for my map.. but im going to keep making/modifying the terrain until its right. If you want to become a map maker you cant let other people always be making your terrain :P

I've been on the terrain for my first AoS map of the 3 part series now for... about 4 hours, and I only have about 10% done. Although, I really want this to be very realistic, like I added an archery range, more info on what importance that has later in the months to come, a graveyard, shipyard, and even 2 shrines

Although I know pretty much which way the path is going to fall, I suggest:
1. sketch it on paper.
2. create a new map
3. put the paths in first with any terrian but the original (so you can see it)
4. place the towns/capitols/bases.
5. spice it all up with the good stuff - fx, mountains, rivers, creeks, waterfalls, birds (yes birds, or bats -.- )
6. BE PATIENT. Everyone can do it, it just takes tons of patience and thinking like you were actually living in your map, and make the terrain to that standard. (helps me on skinning and such).

Good luck toochaos, and Aetos is right. If you want to be a map maker, you can't have anyone else make the map for you, that is unless, you are working as a team. :D

or, I think its under View, go down to Grid and select which grid sizing you want (large, medium, and small)

And what do you mean by

the bases are small and uneven and always misshapen

Well, then don't be afriad to spread them out ;) ! Misshapen isn't a problem. Step outside the box for one mapping time and make the bases "different" such as making one up on a cliff, behind a river, or something of that sort. Add terrain buffs/changes and always make sure you added doodads and such. (send a screenshot of your bases and I'd be glad to give you constructive critisism. :D
