I just started making my first map for WC3. I'm pretty experienced with map making since I've been making them for Neverwinter Nights for a year. I've run into a problem though. Which is really dumb (coz I've seen people do it but I cant figure how they did it). I'm making an AOS type map. I place the player start locations at the hero choosing area. But when I run the map the player starts with a town hall and 5 peasants (default melee map setting). I tried getting rid of the start location and placing a custom 'chooser' unit but when trying to save the map the editor wouldn't save unless I placed the start locations or clicked "yes" for it to generate random start locs. I just want the player to start with the 'chooser' unit. Thanx in advance ![]() |

You should first open up some premade maps and learn from them, if you are having problems with that you will have to learn alot more about triggers in order to make an AOS style map. For real though make a test map and play around with the triggers and varibles that is the only way you will get better. |

I've played around with the WE before. Just now I've gotten into making an accual map. Besides it wont be that big (96x64). I just didnt know how to get rid of the start location default (now I do ). btw If I have a problem I ussualy open another map to see how they did it. Thanx for the quick replies :) |

Hey, another NWN modder! Welcome to the community, Ulef. You already got your problem taken care of, looks like. If, for some reason, you don't want to pre-place units, you could create a chooser unit during Map Init at the starting location of each player that matches the Player Slot Status "is playing" condition. This'd be useful if you wanted to, for example, have 4 different chooser units that you could preselect by choosing your race in the window before the map starts. |

...did you try deleting the "Melee Game - Create Starting Units" trigger? Seriously, no offense, but if you don't know this, you won't get far on making a good AoS map. |

Umm, I dont think you realize how small 96x64 is...its...well, tiny. If you want to actually make a playable AoS, try the one above 96 for both width and length. Requires more terraining, but barely. Its good that you carry some experience with past games, but like any game, its completely different from anything youve played before. Wc3's heart and soul lies in triggers! Do not try and comprehend them, do not try and defy them, all you can do is study, obey, and use them! Also, (unless you already know this) you will doubtfully even come 1/2 way to finishing your map. But do not cry, young one, for everything you do in life is just practice for Warcraft III (well, unless you actually HAVE a life). Sorry to lecture, im tired and feeling wired....(that ryhmed) Also, my last tip before I go to bed - Do NOT use the NOISE tool when editing terrain! It might look pretty inside WE but when playing the map, its ugly, unnatural, and a disgrace to any good terrainer/map. Well, good luck, my friend, and find your place in the ranks of Mapper Hall! PS - Its wise to look for your specialty in map editing, wether it be triggering, terraining (my specialty), custom units/spells, storyboarding (another quality trait) Good night and dont think im too weird (only a wee bit) |
