killing units and lag

Howdy, me again still chasing map performance. I have a question -- does a trigger that creates and kills units with "unit kill" cause more lag than creating units with a trigger, and allowing the units to be killed by enemies (say, a player)?

I'm concerned with lag over time, not lag when the trigger might be executed....that is...accumulated lag.

I have already made sure to strip all "unit remove" triggers as I've heard they cause this type of lag.

First off, I'm not sure the unit remove stuff applies anymore in TFT. This would need to be tested. TFT seems to be more stable in general in terms of long term lag -- just remember to delete your special effects and floating text.

Anyway, it should make little to no difference. The only significant reason a trigger might be laggier is if the trigger kills a crapload of units at once, while player's kill of units slowly.

Damn, that means my long term lag problems are still due to something else. I've already diabled all special effects and most triggers (there are hardly any now). Arrrrgg....

I also went and deleted most of the cinematic doodads I could find in case they were somehow causing a slowly increasing lag.

I don't suppose anyone knows a way to test a map to find a cause of memory buildups -- like a profiler or something? Is there a tool or method?

when the choppiness just starts to build up over time, its due to periodics 99% of the time

Ok, follow-up question then about periodics:
Is it better to have one huge trigger running every 120 seconds, or two smaller triggers that each run every 120 seconds.

BTW -- that's the scale and number of triggers in my map.

i dunno why u'r having so much problems with performance, cause i have a civilization kinda map with farms that build up crops over time (persistant special effects) until they're harvested, the building up happens about every 20 seconds -- i've gone through the game with like 20 farms over 1.5 hours and its speed maintained quite well

just out of curiosity, if you disable the periodics does it still lag after a while?

oh, and the way a unit dies afaik has no effect on performance

I'm not sure why I having so much trouble either...I've been working on it (the performance) for ages. I believe my last test (in which I disabled all periodics and let it run for ~1 hour) showed no lag, and then when I added a few back in it lagged. It's tough though, because each test takes an hour...an hour in which I must keep my hands off the pc, heh. I just let it sit.

I keep thinking, I'm not running very often and not creating many units. DOTA never lags like this and it makes more units more often....

I need more tests I suppose.

maybe try getting a better video card.... or maybe its your computer..

Nope, that's not it -- both are top notch.
